National news gave Venture-N 48 hours of coverage. Then it moved on. 

A news analysis of about 1,400 news items found that 87% of coverage came within two days, just as the biggest questions were starting to get answered.

As national outlets cut the teams covering LGBTQ+ communities and q***r newsrooms struggle to survive, fewer reporters are left to stay with these stories.

It meant that unverified rumors filled the void, and the community felt taken advantage of.

The Venture-N shooting made headlines around the world. Two days later, national attention had all but disappeared.

An analysis of about 1,400 news items found coverage dropped 94% from Sept. 2 to Sept. 3. As the national media moved on, unverified narratives filled the gap, and the lives of Cameron Davis Capara and Vincent Anthony Siqueiros were often reduced to how they died.

Venture-N Shooting Showed Limits of National Coverage of Anti-LGBTQ+ Violence The Tucson attack generated widespread coverage, but an analysis shows how quickly national attention faded as the community confronted its aftermath.

A shuttered prison in Marana is about to reopen as an ICE jail. The for-profit company running it, Management and Training Corporation, has a record Arizona knows well.

In 2015, the state canceled MTC’s contract at its Kingman prison after a riot.

Investigators described a “culture of disorganization, disengagement, and disregard.”
At Marana, a staffer admitted to state investigators in 2022 that she’d had s*x with an incarcerated man. Under Arizona law, any s*xual contact between staff and people in custody is felony s*xual abuse.

Federal law requires prisons to publicly report allegations like this. But Marana’s 2023 audit reported zero. State records and former employees point to at least three that were left out.

A former MTC employee told us the warden knew about the 2022 case. Another former employee and a state report back him up.

Now MTC is reopening Marana as an ICE jail. Federal officials want to nearly triple its capacity, from 513 beds to about 1,300. Local officials say they’ve been left out of the process, and there’s still no public reopening date.
