Three mountain rescues. One day. One important reminder. ⛰️
Today, Phoenix Fire crews responded to three separate incidents at Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak.
One hiker was critically ill from extreme heat, with a core temperature over 104°F. Another became dizzy and needed help getting off the mountain. A third experienced chest pain near the summit and required an air rescue.
Different emergencies. Same lesson:
☀️ Know the heat.
💧 Bring plenty of water.
🥾 Know the terrain and your limits.
🛑 If something feels wrong, turn around.
Firefighters were dispatched around 11am to the Echo Canyon Trailhead at Camelback Mountain for reports of a hiker experiencing a medical emergency.
Crews made contact with an adult female approximately 1/2 way up the mountain. The patient stated she became overheated and could not continue her descent.
In coordination with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the patient was hoisted off the mountain by MCSO “Fox 1.” At the trailhead, cold-water immersion therapy was started after her core temperature was found to be above 104° with an altered mental status.
The hiker was transferred to an awaiting ambulance and transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Glen Keane grew up in the shadow of Mummy Mountain, calling it his “playground.” Years later, he returned with his grandchildren, only to find himself needing help from Phoenix and Tempe Fire crews after the heat and terrain became too much. Phoenix Police’s helicopter and Fire Dept rescuers ultimately hoisted him safely off the mountain.
Glen is also the legendary Disney animator behind many classics like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Tarzan. Today, Glen returned to the station and presented crews with an incredible one-of-a-kind masterpiece depicting his rescue that day.

We asked two stations to snap a photo every hour of their shift. The result? A reminder that no two days, and no two stations, are ever the same.
If you’re looking for a career where every say brings something new, we’re hiring. Two days left to apply! 🚒
Heavy winds turn a power pole fire into a second alarm fire involving multiple structures.
Fire crews were dispatched around 10:45 PM to the area of 8th St. and Southern Ave. for reports of a pole fire.
On arrival crews had multiple power poles on fire with heavy winds pushing the fire into structures and debris. A total of three structures were fully involved with fire as well as brush, trees, debris, and power poles.
Crews quickly pulled handlines to multiple areas and buildings to surround the fire and prevent further spread.
The call was balanced to a second alarm due to the size of the fire and how strong the winds were blowing.
All three structures were vacant so no one will be displaced. Because of the crews hard work, they were able to stop the fire despite strong winds.
