Predators don’t always look dangerous and that’s exactly why understanding grooming matters.

A predator may seem charming, helpful, patient, or trustworthy. They may even be someone a child, family, or community already knows and likes.

Teaching children that danger only looks scary can make grooming harder to recognize. Prevention starts with understanding that grooming often begins by building trust, creating connection, and gaining access before boundaries are ever crossed.

The more we understand the warning signs of grooming and predatory behavior, the better equipped we are to protect children and teens.

We believe education is the foundation of prevention. We started our educational content series to help make sure the facts and myths on how human trafficking works gets the visibility it needs.

There is a rise in reports of online grooming in correlation with social media, messaging apps, and online gaming platforms. Those channels give predators the ability to communicate with potential victims without ever being near them, until they arrange an in-person meet up. We hope you will take some of this information and help us spread its message to the ones who need it the most.

How Grooming Begins

Targeting:
Identifying personal vulnerabilities > to select a potential victim > while appearing supportive

Fast attachment:
Getting close fast > to build reliance > while calling it connection

Manipulation:
Twisting facts > to change perception > while dismissing concerns

Dependency:
Meeting needs first > to build reliance > while reducing outside support

Many concerning situations begin with what appears to be a harmless interaction, a chat during gameplay, a social media message, or a connection made through the internet.

Recognizing common tactics used to build familiarity can provide valuable context for conversations about protecting children in digital environments.

This video explores the gradual process of manipulation, showing how relationships may be formed long before warning signs become obvious.

Knowledge creates stronger communities. Providing factual resources and increasing public understanding helps support prevention efforts and encourages informed discussions.
