I'm very proud of the fact that my hats are very lightweight, but I didn't have a solid reference point for them. This particular hat, like many I've created, is silk over buckram. Before the decorative band and feather trim are added she's just about 4 ounces. There's no reason that your costumes have to be heavy and uncomfortable in order to make an impact.

One of the things I love about creating historically inspired clothing is figuring out how to create the correct shapes. Sometimes the silhouette is defined by undergarments, such as corsets and bustles. More often than not the exaggerated body shapes were created with tailoring and internal padding. Or modern eye often looks at period portraits and we wonder why anybody would want to look like "that." I look at the images and I wonder how those shapes were created. Let's talk about puffy pants.

The breeches I'm creating for this suit can go by several names. Pumpkin pants, paned hose, or paned slops. They can have decorative panes or not, depending on the social status and personal style of the gentlemen wearing them.

Creating the shape for these required several layers of fabric, including a strip of heavy wool around the lower edge. Heavy tailoring around the thigh creates a support structure that holds the bulk of the hose away from the leg. This reduces the necessity of stuffing the legs to create the required fullness.

These hose will be worn tied to the doublet at the waist. This keeps them at the natural waist and allows the wearer to step into the suit like a onsie.

I haven't tailored a collar in a while. It felt good to create one of these again.

19 buttonholes later, my fingers are done for the night. Creating an original STD is all about the details.

I have 4 new shirts for myself that just need buttons. I figured dinner tonight with friends was a good reason to finish one. I'm going for subtle and understated.

I normally try and take Sundays off from being in the studio to pretend I actually have some semblance work/ life balance. However, my little bout with covid threw my schedule off by several days. So here we are.

I'm doing my best to stay motivated for a few hours, but this is my project manager for the day.

Someone please send red wine.

I may or may not have told a client that I will be hiding a squeaker somewhere in his wedding suit. He and his future husband don't know it yet, but the reception just got more interesting.

Another hat is ready for her new home! This one uses a stunning pewter ribbed silk from Silk Baron, with other Silk Baron products from my stash. Natural pheasant and coque feathers are used for the ornamentation, accented with a mauve ostrich spray. The band is highlighted with glass pearls and iridescent faceted beads.
