Our Summer Reading Program has officially ended! For all of our patrons that participated, thank you for Unearthing a Story with us and discovering more of the wonderful books we have in our collection!

If you have not yet submitted your completed bingo card, please call us at 602-255-5578 so we can record your progress or return it to us in the mail. Later this month, all participants that completed the program will be entered into our prize drawing!

We are deep into summer here in Arizona, with temperatures climbing above 110 degrees in some parts of the state. Fortunately, most of us have air conditioning, but what about the plants and animals in the desert that don't?

In Sonoran Desert Summer (DB 32572), professor John Alcock delves into the lives of the plants and animals that survive in the hostile environment of the southern Arizona desert. Divided into five sections, May through September, chapters discuss empress butterflies, ground squirrels, carpenter bees, the culinary preferences and sexual practices of big-jawed beetles, and the lifestyles of various other denizens of the desert.

It's July 1st, which means we are officially halfway through this year's Summer Reading Program! The theme this year is Unearth a Story, and our mascot, Monty, has been making good progress tracking his reading!

The Summer Reading Program runs through August 1st, and is open to patrons of any age from the Arizona Talking Book Library. If you complete the program, you will be entered into a prize drawing!

Today, June 19th, is Juneteenth! Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865. To celebrate and learn more about the history behind this holiday, check out these titles on BARD or request them from your librarian today:

Juneteenth by Rebecca Sabelko (DB 132333) - From learning about history to enjoying a barbecue, there is a lot to do on Juneteenth! Young readers can learn about this important holiday, from when it started to today's traditions in this engaging title. On Juneteenth by Annette Gordon-Reed (DB 103364) - A historian reflects on the long and complicated history of Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the emancipation of America's enslaved. She particularly examines its origins in Texas, the many hardships faced by African Americans in the intervening years, and the integral role of African Americans in Texas history. Unrated.
