Congratulations to Chip Thomas on being named a 2026 MacArthur Foundation Fellow!

A muralist and physician whose work centers on bringing Indigenous stories into public spaces, Chip Thomas in collaboration with Esther Belin (Diné) joined us at the Heard Museum in 2020 to create a powerful exterior mural reflecting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Native communities.

We’re honored that this meaningful work is part of the Heard Museum’s history and celebrate this recognition of Chip Thomas’ impactful artistry.

Rabbits have been inspiring Native artists for generations. 🐇

Today on , we’re highlighting this miniature silver seed jar by Norbert Peshlakai (Diné) featuring Mimbres-style rabbits stamped into a circular pattern on the surface.

Peshlakai’s work is one example of the many ways Native contemporary artists draw from cultural and artistic traditions to continue carrying them forward.

As the Heard Museum approaches its 100th year, “Milestones: The Hope & John L. Furth Collection” is the first in a series of exhibitions celebrating the people and gifts who have helped shape our story. The exhibition brings together carefully selected pottery, sculpture, textiles, baskets, and beadwork from a collection of more than 260 works spanning the 19th century to the present.

Known for their intricately placed inlay (often requiring 5,000-6,000 stones), Carl and Irene Clark are both self-taught contemporary Native jewelry artists from the Navajo Nation with nearly 50 years of silversmithing experience. 🔍
