James Johnson is an award-winning Tlingit artist and carver from Juneau, Alaska who has dedicated his life to honoring his ancestors through his art. This First Friday, join us at the Heard Museum for a live carving demonstration by James Johnson and discover the stories, artistry, and culture behind his work!

It’s also Family Movie Night with Arizona PBS! Rotating throughout the night in Crossroads Gallery, catch two one-hour long specials of Molly of Denali — “Molly and the Great One” and “Wise Raven & Old Crow.”

As always, museum admission is FREE* during First Friday events and includes access to current exhibitions, the Family Activity Room, and more.

Join Dr. X’unei Lance Twitchell (Lingít/Haida/Yup’ik/Sami) and Wáats’asdiyei Joe Yates (Haida) for a live discussion about Indigenous storytelling, Native representation, and their creative processes.

This Virtual Art Talk is inspired by the traveling family cultural experience, Molly of Denali: An Alaskan Adventure — now open at the Heard Museum through Aug. 30, 2026.

Maie Bartlett Heard and Dwight B. Heard’s global travels inspired their collection of Indigenous art and led them to open a museum next to their downtown Phoenix home, “Casa Blanca.”

Nearly 100 years later, the Heard Museum has grown in both size and stature to become recognized internationally for the quality of its collections, world class exhibitions, educational programming, and vibrant cultural events.

Join Dr. Ann Marshall, Heard Museum Director of Research, for a 30min Curator Talk in the 1929 Gallery reflecting on the Museum’s founding in 1929 through the present day.

This August, join the Heard Museum and Arizona PBS for an Alaska-inspired First Friday Family Movie Night! 🎥

This special evening celebrates two one-hour long specials from the PBS KIDS TV series Molly of Denali. Each special will be shown twice so your family has flexibility to explore, create, and enjoy the Museum at your pace.
⭐ 4 & 6 p.m. | “Molly and the Great One”
⭐ 5 & 7 p.m. | “Wise Raven & Old Crow”

Between screenings, don’t miss the opportunity to learn more about Tlingit art from artist James Johnson who will be doing live carving demos throughout the evening.

As always, museum admission is FREE* between 4 – 8 pm on First Fridays. *Add-on experience fee required for entry to Molly of Denali: An Alaskan Adventure and can be paid at the door to Steele Auditorium.

Husky Day ties into Molly of Denali: An Alaskan Adventure, where sled dogs play an important role in travel, teamwork, and daily life for many Alaska Native communities. 🏔️

Sunday between 10 am – 2pm, visitors will have the chance to connect what you see in the Molly of Denali experience to real-life care and companionship with special guests from AZ Husky Rescue!
