Safety. Stability. A Fresh Start.
For some women veterans, the hardest battle can begin after their military service ends.
Inside U.S.VETS-Phoenix, a new women-only housing wing is giving veterans something many have gone without for years: a safe place to breathe, rebuild and begin again.
The women living there have different stories — but many share experiences with trauma, homelessness and struggling to navigate life after service.
Now, they have a secure place to call home, support services, classes and help accessing the VA benefits they’ve earned.
And perhaps most importantly, they have each other.
One veteran told us: “Once I’m in here, I know I’m safe.”
This is their story — and a reminder that asking for help isn't weakness. Sometimes, it's the first step toward a fresh start.

From Phoenix to the depths of the Pacific.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Rene Rodriguez Valdez, a Phoenix native and 2015 graduate of Alhambra High School, is serving aboard the USS Kentucky as part of the U.S. Navy’s long tradition of service beneath the sea.
For Rodriguez Valdez, his journey was shaped in part by a neighbor who was a Vietnam veteran — someone whose pride in his military service left a lasting impression.
“I wanted to inspire people back home to see that they can do some amazing things even growing up in a challenging environment,” Rodriguez Valdez said.
Now, he’s doing exactly that — serving his country and showing what’s possible.

Today is National Navajo Code Talkers Day — a day to remember the Native American veterans whose languages helped protect Allied forces and change the course of World War II.
And today, Phoenix will welcome one of the last two surviving Navajo Code Talkers.
At 101 years old, Thomas H. Begay carries a story that deserves to be heard — from serving as a Marine Code Talker during World War II to later serving in the Army during the Korean War.
More than 400 Navajo men were recruited to develop and use a code based on their language. Their messages helped protect military operations and save lives — all while they were sworn to secrecy for decades.
Their service was once classified. Today, it is part of American history.
And as fewer of these heroes remain, the opportunity to hear their stories becomes even more precious.
🇺🇸 Remember. Honor. Listen.

Happy Friday everyone! Great view taken by my son from high atop Piestewa Peak this morning.
At 2,608 feet above the Valley, you are reminded that this mountain carries a story much bigger than the incredible view.
Piestewa Peak is named for Lori Piestewa, an Arizona Native American and U.S. Army soldier from the Hopi and Mexican-American communities. She was killed in Iraq in 2003 and was the first Native American woman in the U.S. military to die in combat. The mountain, formerly known as Squaw Peak, was officially renamed Piestewa Peak in 2008 to honor her service and sacrifice.

What if the next mission for a veteran isn’t overseas — but on a stage?
An Arizona theater company is giving veterans a chance to find camaraderie, tell stories and discover a new sense of purpose after leaving the military.
For some, it’s acting. For others, it’s backstage. And for some, it may simply be having a place where they belong again.
“The door is always open.”
I take you inside Arizona Frontline Theater and the Silent Survivors Project. 👇
The upcoming performances will take place at West Valley Arts Council Arts HQ Gallery.

There's a new Dust Scale now being used in Arizona to measure the severity of our dust storms.
I spoke with Dr. Ryan Heintzman from ASU School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning about what the new scale means and the fact that we've experienced two record-level dust storms during the overnight hours this week.
