A few crashes, some blood, one broken rib, and five guys who made it to the Kern River anyway.

After the heat, the rocks, the falls and the long descent, getting into that ice cold river felt about as good as anything could have.

But there was another part of the story I hadn't expected.

I had started this trip as the outsider. Joe was an old friend, but I had only met the rest of these guys two nights before.

By the time we reached the bottom, I didn't feel much like the new guy anymore.

The faster riders had spent the day stopping and waiting for us to catch up. Everybody got knocked around to one degree or another, and we ultimately came off that mountain together.

There was quite a bit of Scotch afterward, plenty of toasting, and a lot of camaraderie. After surviving the Cannell Plunge together, I felt like I had been accepted into the group.

Five older guys. Five e-bikes. A questionable decision or two.

106°F. NO SHADE. AND A NEARLY 100 POUND BIKE.

As we descended out of the pine forest, everything changed.

The temperature climbed to around 106°F, the shade virtually disappeared, and the trail didn't get any easier.

Everybody went down at some point. I fell more than anybody and had the distinction of drawing first blood. Another rider took a hard fall and broke a rib.

Joe and I were both wearing our own ExtremeMist hydration backpacks, each carrying two liters of water. We wore them because that's what we normally ride with. The other guys had never seen the system before.

Those same two liters supplied both drinking water and misting, so in that kind of heat I had to manage the water carefully. When I really needed cooling, I could turn on the mist with the 8 speed wireless remote, adjust it, then shut it back off to conserve water.

And I needed it.

Every time I went down, I had to wrestle that nearly 100 pound e-bike back upright. A couple of times it went over the side of the trail, which meant dragging it back up before I could even start riding again.

9,200 FEET. FIVE OLDER GUYS. QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENT.

The Cannell Plunge doesn't care how old you are.

Five older guys on e-bikes, starting around 9,200 feet in the beautiful pine forest above Kernville, California.

Four of these guys had known each other most of their lives. My riding partner, Joe, is a longtime friend of mine, more like a little brother, and he had known the others since childhood.

I was the new guy. I had met most of them only two nights earlier.

Cannell is a Black Diamond, expert level mountain bike trail. Some of these guys were experienced enough to belong there.

I wasn't.

At 69, I was the oldest of the group, definitely not an expert mountain biker, and I had also managed to bring a very heavy e-bike with 4.8 inch tires that had no business being on this trail.

Everyone apparently knew that except me. They were kind enough to tell me after we started.

By then there was only one way out. I had to get myself and that bike down the mountain.

And we hadn't even reached the Plunge yet.
