They had a $60,000 wedding budget.
And somehow, nobody looked happy.

A couple sat down with their wedding planner to plan their big day. They had ideas. Good ones.

The planner knew the area, knew the venues, knew the vendors, and knew exactly how to put all the pieces together.

Church? Check. Reception? Check. Flowers, food, music, photographs, decorations? Check, check, check.

On paper, it was becoming a perfectly respectable wedding.

But listening to the couple talk about it was a little like planning a party with Eeyore.

Nothing was wrong. They just didn’t seem excited.

“My parents saved $60,000 for the wedding. Will that cover all of this?”

Yes. It would. They agreed to meet again and finalize everything.

Then something interesting happened.

Later, while having coffee, they sat across from another couple who had just been married at Phoenix Wedding Studio. They were looking at actual wedding pictures of their phone.

That couple told them what they had done.

Parents. Brothers and sisters. A simple, meaningful ceremony. About 30 minutes.

No ballroom. No seating chart worthy of a military operation.

No three-hour production requiring the budget of a small municipality. And suddenly the conversation changed.

Not:

“What can we add to the wedding?”

But:

“What else could we do with $60,000?”

Now that got them excited.

They eventually came to Phoenix Wedding Studio with their parents and siblings and had a sweet, intimate ceremony with the people closest to them.

Then they got on with the marriage.

And the $60,000?

That money helped them buy a house and enjoy some of the very good things that come after the wedding.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a beautiful, elaborate wedding if that’s what you truly want.

But here’s a question worth asking before signing another contract:

Which excites you more—the wedding you’re planning, or what the same money could do for the life you’re planning?

Sometimes the smartest wedding upgrade is keeping the money.

Wedding planning can get expensive, one “small upgrade” at a time.

A bigger cake. Better chairs. More flowers. Another package. Another add-on. More people and feelings. Before long, you’re halfway down the wedding rabbit hole wondering how you got there.

At Phoenix Wedding Studio, we believe the marriage should be the big deal—not the bill.

In Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy was a man of considerable means. But having money and wasting money are two very different things.

That may be one of the most important lessons for couples planning a wedding today.

There is nothing wrong with elegance. Nothing wrong with beautiful flowers, wonderful food, a special venue, or adding something memorable to your celebration.

But somewhere along the way, “It’s for a wedding” became an excuse for couples to accept prices they might question anywhere else.

Elizabeth speaks the truth. Darcy gives the right response:

“You have the most money of anyone.”
“Yes, but I’m still not paying $14 per chair sash.”

That’s not being cheap. That’s knowing the difference between what you can afford and what something is worth.

A wedding should reflect your love, your personality, your priorities—and yes, your financial common sense.

Spend where it brings you joy.
Question what doesn’t make sense.
Never confuse a bigger bill with a better marriage.

True elegance is not measured by money.

Wedding planning should never feel like someone is raiding your bank account.

A higher price isn’t automatically a better experience, and a lower price doesn’t mean your wedding matters any less. Before agreeing to another upgrade, package, fee, or “must-have,” ask a few simple questions:

What does this actually add to our day? Is the price clear and reasonable? Will we remember this—or just remember paying for it?

Spend generously on the things that truly matter to you, and feel perfectly comfortable saying no to the rest.

As Robin reminds us in Episode 4:

You shouldn’t have to beg, borrow, or steal to afford getting married.

WEDDING PAYMENTS: A CONVENIENCE—or A WARNING?

Many wedding businesses will generously give couples time to pay their balance. Some even offer payment plans that continue long after the wedding day is over.

That can sound helpful. It can let you add a little more pizazz—better flowers, upgraded décor, another hour, another enhancement, another “must-have.”

But here’s the question worth asking:

Should one day of real joy require months—or years—of payments afterward?

In this economy, couples need to think clearly before putting down a bunch of deposits. Each deposit may feel manageable by itself. Added together, they can quietly become a very large financial obligation that still has to be paid.

A payment plan does not make something less expensive. It only changes when you feel the expense.

Your wedding should celebrate the beginning of your life together—not create a financial burden that follows you into it.

Spend what you can comfortably afford.
Choose what truly matters.
Skip what doesn’t.
And remember:

You can add pizazz without adding debt.

Nothing wrong with a big wedding, but it’s not on everyone’s bucket list.

Not everyone does a big wedding to furnish their home anymore. Most couples already have the toaster, the towels, the dishes—and probably two air fryers.

And not everyone dreams of spending months planning one expensive day.

Some couples would rather put that money toward a home, a honeymoon, paying off debt, building savings—or simply keeping it.

A beautiful marriage doesn’t require a ballroom, 150 guests, chair sashes, favors, matching napkins, or a five-figure bill.

If the big wedding is your dream, have the big wedding.

But if what you really want is to look at the person you love and say, “Let’s just get married,” that deserves to be celebrated too.

Spend what makes sense. Skip what doesn’t. Keep your priorities—and your money—in perspective.
