All are welcome on Thursday, October 15 at 4:30PM, for a guided walk through Scottsdale’s Indian Bend Wash, a landmark example of how landscape can function simultaneously as infrastructure, habitat, and public amenity. Led by urban ecology experts, we will explore the ideas and ecological principles behind this innovative landscape, including nature-based infrastructure, flood resilience, and multifunctional landscapes. We’ll consider how designing for water can produce landscapes that are not only more resilient, but also more vibrant, accessible, and enjoyable.

Presented by AIA Arizona Committee on the Environment (COTE) and AZASLA, this walk offers an opportunity to step outside the traditional boundaries of architecture and landscape architecture and consider ecology as a design partner, one that can help shape more resilient, adaptable, and connected places.

Urban Ecology Hike Facilitators:
✨Dr. Dan Childers School of Sustainability at ASU and Urban Ecologist
✨Harry Cooper, Director of Water Conservation Innovation for the Arizona Water Innovation Initiative (AWII)

ONE week from today! Join us on Tuesday, September 22 for an interactive workshop that brings current ASU sustainability research into conversation with built environment professionals. Register here: https://tinyurl.com/4vxpfah5

Attendees will hear from ASU faculty and PhD researchers whose work spans multiple scales of the built environment, from building design and performance to urban systems and infrastructure. Following the presentations, participants will break into small groups led by ASU researchers to explore a critical question: How can we move promising research from the university into the real world?

Together, we’ll examine the challenges associated with translating research into professional practice and identify opportunities to overcome barriers, build stronger connections between academia and industry, and advance more sustainable approaches to the built environment.

The Role of AI in Practice. Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way architects work. This virtual discussion will explore both the opportunities and challenges AI presents for the profession. The panelists will also look beyond productivity to consider the broader implications of AI adoption, including workforce impacts, technology investments, energy consumption, and will also consider how architectural education and professional practice can evolve to prepare the next generation of architects for an AI-enabled future while strengthening the critical thinking, technical knowledge, collaboration, and professional judgment that define the profession.

The goal is not simply to ask what AI can do, but how architects can use it responsibly, critically, and effectively to shape the future of practice.

Moderated by Riley Hausman, AIA, Architect at Corgan, the panel will include:
✨Kathy Hancox, AIA, Principal at HK Associates
✨Philip Horton, Assoc. AIA, Co-Director of the Center of Building Innovation (CoBI) and Clinical Associate Professor of Architecture at ASU
