Beulah Presbyterian Church has been a longtime partner of Landforce for the construction and maintenance of their trail system. We’re excited to return to the trails our crews built and to update them to meet the needs of our partner. The congregation of Beulah Presbyterian Church asked us to install some wooden box steps and a handrail so that navigating the trail would be safer and more welcoming for all ages to access the rest of the trail system and the serenity of nature.

During crew member training, Landforce crew members gain experience in carpentry math, circular saw operation, and the assembly and installation of timber structures. Projects like this give them the opportunity to apply those new skills through meaningful, hands-on experience.

Continuing our work at Beulah while watching our crew put their training into practice brings a special kind of energy to this project!

Planting trees is only part of the story. Helping them survive is often even harder. In native habitat restoration sites, it is common for only about 75% of newly planted trees to survive their first six months. At Ballfield Farm in Perry South, 48 of the 50 trees our crew planted last year are thriving. That is a 96% survival rate.

This site presented an especially rewarding challenge. After removing extensive invasive vegetation, we knew the soil held a seed bank of invasive plants ready to regenerate, so we built a planting process designed to ensure long term success. From intensive training in proper tree planting techniques to close supervision and thoughtful aftercare tailored to both the trees and the conditions of the site, our approach is built for long term success.

This week, our crew weeded around the tree cages, removed invasive plants, and provided the ongoing care that gives young trees the best chance to establish themselves and thrive. Continued stewardship, including watering, weeding, monitoring, and managing new invasive growth, is essential to helping these native trees compete and flourish.

Ballfield Farm is managed by Allegheny Land Trust, and we are proud to partner in the long term restoration of this community green space. Watching these trees take root and thrive is a powerful reminder that successful restoration does not end on planting day. It needs continued care.
