Exhibitor Spotlight: Maggie Bjorklund maggie bjorklund
Maggie Bjorklund is a visual artist working primarily in oil paint. She’s a Pittsburgh local and was a Bunker resident in 2024. More recently her work has been included in the Tomayko Foundation collection, Field Day | Pittsburgh’s Best Coworking Space , and AAP ✨ Her solo exhibition Glowing in That Waste opens at Bunker next Friday, October 2nd - join us from 6-9pm for the opening reception 🍂
Here’s how Maggie describes her work and process:
“I practice art as a way of being present in and attentive to the world. Primarily working in oil on panel, I paint from observation, memory, and feeling, seeking to evoke a tactile and emotional encounter with a subject. I draw inspiration from nature, particularly its cycles of decay and growth. I closely observe my surroundings while walking in the woods behind my home, or working in my garden, seeking resonant imagery, texture, and color to carry into the paintings. Compost, soil, plants, bark, insects, water, and light are recurring references in the work.
My process is intuitive and materially driven. Forms emerge as I manipulate the paint, allowing the movement of the brush to guide the work. Gesture and texture take precedence over rendering. Sweeping, thin brushstrokes coalesce to suggest rather than define forms. The works inhabit a space between abstraction and recognition, with subtle moments of clarity emerging within atmospheric compositions.“

We are so excited to announce our next exhibitor, Maggie Bjorklund! Maggie maggie bjorklund is returning to Bunker to present solo exhibition Glowing in That Waste that will open on Friday, October 2nd. Maggie is a Pittsburgh local and was a Bunker resident in 2024 🍂
Glowing in That Waste:
Crouched over the garden bed, March air breathing, we peer into wondrous depths of overwintered soil. Remnants of late autumn death are laid bare. Webs of greyed straw cover skeletonized leaves; brown fungi cluster along bark decayed to powder; citrus rinds curl between worms and obliterated Roma vines. Cupped in hands, shoveled into piles, crumpled in corners, pressed beneath fingernails, life persists.
Glowing in That Waste considers decomposition and the necessity of decay. The works reflect on the beauty of matter breaking down to nourish further life. They emerge from looking closely at my garden, the woods, and the various dusty, buggy corners of my house. The exhibition is also a practice of attending closely to the life around me and, by extension, to the decay of my own body.

New BQ: Young One 📷
Young One young one 영원 joined us at Bunker earlier this summer and we wish she could stay forever! Her multifaceted practice and ever-evolving studio installation enchanted us all ✨ Young one’s practice unfolds as an ongoing dialogue between her body and the world, spanning painting, drawing, photography, and spatial installation. Walking is central to her work as both metaphor and embodied practice. She invites materials from the time and place she inhabits into the work as collaborators, from organic and industrial fragments to wood chunks and translucent fabric. Layering, sanding, and sustained care allow her to synthesize others’ traces and machine logic with her own visual decisions and labor, revealing the surface as a site where countless overlapping times converge in the now. Keep up with Young One on her page young one 영원 - we can’t wait to see what she does next 🩵

Fiberglass Dreams, Steel Nightmares closes today - join us for one last look from 12-2pm
This solo exhibition by Loc Huynh is an exploration of the bewildering forces that have shaped a collective nostalgia for theme parks. Using his own personal family archives as a means of investigating these ideas, he shifts between the playful innocence of specific memories and the contaminated environments they exist in. Figures are often delineated from the background to highlight the oddity of their relationship to the worlds they inhabit. Animal sculptures and costumes also hint at this insidious dynamic, feeling more like a mockery rather than an homage to the natural world.
