Food belongs to people, not landfills. Download the 412 Food Rescue app to get started! It's so easy. Retired and have a few minutes to pitch in? Great!

At 412 Food Rescue, we believe that food belongs to people, not landfills. That's why we created an app that automates all the logistics of rescuing retail, surplus food, to make it easy for our volunteers to pitch in. In just 30 minutes to an hour, you can pick up fresh food that's about to get thrown away and deliver it to a non-profit that serves our neighbors facing food insecurity. It feels so good to help end food waste AND hunger at the same time! Since 87% of rescued food is fresh, time is always of the essence. That's why volunteer drivers like you, make all the difference. Restaurants, food stores and all kinds of retail food locations often have extra food to donate right near where you live. So many times, claiming a food rescue is convenient, and can become part of your everyday routine. Just download our app today - it's friendly, intuitive and fun! There's no age limit - if you're a parent with kids, bring them along. Enjoying a flexible work schedule? You can find a food rescue that works for you. We are so grateful for our growing community of Food Rescue Heroes all across Western Pennsylvania. Thank you for learning more about us and hope you'll join our movement, too.

🏃 Run for a reason this year at the Pittsburgh Marathon!

Whether your distance is 1 mile or 26.2, you can join Team 412 Food Rescue and make every mile mean a little more. Choose from a variety of events, set your fundraising goal, and turn your miles into support for food rescue right here in our community.

Because being a good neighbor can look like a lot of things.

Sometimes, it looks like picking up surplus food and delivering it to a nonprofit down the street. Sometimes, it looks like donating to keep that food moving.

And sometimes, it looks like lacing up your shoes and running for your neighbors. 💚

This year, we’ll also be hosting a few pop-up events for runners who sign up with our team, more details to come!

Pick your distance. Run for a reason. Run for your neighbors.

This week, we’ve shared just a few of the nonprofit partners who help make food rescue possible. As we wrap up the week, we’re coming back to a moment that showed what can happen when an entire community is connected: one million food rescues.

At the center of it all is

A food donor says, “We have food.”
Food Rescue Hero puts that food into motion.
A volunteer says, “I can take it.”
A nonprofit partner says, “We can get it to our community.”

That’s tech for good. Technology that makes it easier for people to show up for one another.

Because behind every rescue is something really simple: neighbors helping neighbors.

Our community is big. Thousands of people, businesses and organizations choosing to show up in different ways. And when that many people decide they can do something good for their neighbors, the impact adds up.

One million rescues is proof of what we can do together.

Keep showing up. Keep choosing your neighbors. Keep good food moving.

Celebrating our one millionth rescue was pretty incredible!

But one million rescues don’t happen without our nonprofit partners, who distribute that food in their communities.

They are a critical part of every rescue, helping get good food directly to the people and communities they already know and serve.

This week, we’re highlighting just a few of those partners and the important work they do every day. 412 Food Rescue works with nearly 500 nonprofit partners across the Pittsburgh region.

One million rescues took a whole network. And we’re grateful for every partner helping us keep good food moving.

We will not ignore hunger.

In 2025, the government stopped tracking hunger in America. That doesn't mean it went away. With the largest SNAP and WIC cuts in the program's history now in force, more of our neighbors are at risk and we refuse to look away.

One million rescues. One movement. Thousands of people choosing to keep good food moving. 💚

Powered by Food Rescue Hero, volunteers across North America have now completed ONE MILLION food rescues, moving surplus food to communities instead of letting it go to waste.

And while rescue #1,000,000 could have happened anywhere across the Food Rescue Hero Network, it happened right here, where this movement began: Pittsburgh.

Friday morning, 412 Food Rescue volunteer Barb completed the milestone rescue, moving surplus food from GetGo at Cranberry Crossroads to nonprofit partner Christian Housing, Alexis Manor.

But this milestone is much bigger than one rescue or one city. It represents 63,000 people across North America taking action through Food Rescue Hero.

What started in Pittsburgh has grown into a movement.

One million rescues and we’re still moving. 💚

The moment surplus food becomes available, the clock starts ticking.

Our Operations Team is already asking: Where can this go? Which nonprofit partner can receive it? Who can get it out into the community quickly?

Each year, around 650 food donors provide surplus food, 1,180 active volunteers help keep it moving, and our fleet team completes 29,000 rescues across Southwestern Pennsylvania.

At the center of where that food goes are nearly 520 nonprofit partners, organizations already embedded in their communities that know how to get good food to the people they serve.

412 Food Rescue isn’t a traditional food bank. We mobilize food. Our food donors, volunteers, fleet team and nonprofit partners work together to move good food quickly and get it where it can make an immediate impact.

Take a look at the roadmap above to follow the journey of a food rescue, from surplus food, to pickup, to one of our nonprofit partners and, ultimately, into the community.

What happens to rescued food that needs a little more work before it can reach our neighbors?

That’s where the Good Food Project comes in.

Since 2019, the Good Food Project in Millvale has helped 412 Food Rescue find another use for surplus food that may be too large, too unusual or too difficult to distribute as-is.

With the help of volunteers, rescued ingredients are transformed into nutritious, heat-and-eat meals, while bulk food donations are repackaged into grocery-sized portions that can be distributed through our nonprofit and community partners.

And the people you see here are a huge part of making that possible.

Individuals, families, coworkers, community groups and organizations come together at the Good Food Project to prep, cook, portion and pack food, helping us get more good food to neighbors instead of letting it go to waste.

The Good Food Project is where food rescue, hunger relief and community come together.
