We're feeling energized this week coming out of Tuesday night's Trash Talk event!

Our third annual fundraiser dinner and speaker event was by far the biggest and most successful yet. We received so much support for Allegheny CleanWays and our mission to engage with communities to eliminate litter and illegal dumping. Thank you ☺️

We were ecstatic to have Edward Humes, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Total Garbage and Garbology, speak virtually while local actor Ellen Kotzin MC'd the night at Hazelwood Brew House. We hope folks left the evening with a fresh understanding of the systemic crisis of plastic waste and a renewed drive to help solve it.

In total, we raised $4,900 to cap off the end of a fiscal year that saw an inspiring increase in individual giving! We hope everyone had a chance to take a trashy Polaroid picture home with them to remember the night for years to come.

Thank you to our Trash Talk sponsors Duolingo, 412 Clean Teams, Shift Collaborative, and TulaBooks! And an additional heartfelt thank you to Hazelwood Brew House for generously providing their beautiful space, catering, and drinks.

🗑️Come talk trash with us on Tuesday, September 15 at Trash Talk, Allegheny CleanWays’ annual fundraiser dinner, at Hazelwood Brew House.

Trash Talk will be hosted by me, Ellen Kotzin, and we’ll be welcoming a special guest speaker this year. Edward Humes, author of two nonfiction books about trash, Garbology and Total Garbage. He’ll be zooming in from his home in California, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask him your most pressing questions about waste!

Dinner will be provided by Comfort & Spice Cafe, with drinks available from Abjuration Brewing Co, Abstract Realm Brewing Co, and New France Brewing Co. Plus, we’ll have a photo station where you can make a Polaroid with trash treasures to take home!
Thank you to our event sponsors Duolingo, 412 Clean Teams, Shift Collaborative, and Tula Books!

This year, we are welcoming Garbology & Total Trash author Edward Humes virtually for the talk and Q&A portion. Local actor Ellen Kotzin (Pittsburgh Hills) will be hosting in person at our event space, Hazelwood Brew House. There will even be a photo station for you to take your own polaroid picture with trash treasures. It all happens next Tue. September 15 from 6pm-8pm. We hope to see you there!

Trash Talk 2026 is sponsored by Duolingo, 412 Clean Teams, Shift Collaborative, and Tula Books.

Our monthly large group DumpBusts are back! These cleanups are different than our weekly ones. The dumpsites are bigger and badder, meaning the volunteer team we need must likewise be scaled up.

On August 29, we tackled a massive and deep dumpsite in the Hill District. The trash was packed so high and so dense that volunteers didn't even start seeing patches of soil until the end of the three hour cleanup! We saved 72 pounds of glass and 30 pounds of aluminum for recycling.

Full waste totals will be shared on a later date when the site is finished. Our next large group cleanup is Sunday, September 27 in Perry South. Register to volunteer now https://form.jotform.com/262223955466160
