The Communication Van Summer Team is out testing hearing and providing free hearing aids to the community! Drs. Ashley Parker, Taylor Murray, and Melissa Ruscetta are leading our AuD students (Izzy T., Sabrina C., Laura C., and Jessica W.) in their clinical placements this summer in our mobile unit all over Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas.

Since March, the Communication Van traveled to 8 sites, saw over 50 patients, and fit over 30 FREE hearing aids! 🦻🏻

“A cochlear implant consists of external and internal parts that collect sound and stimulate the auditory nerve, sending signals to the brain while bypassing the damage,” said UPMC audiologist Jillian Chapman Glasstetter of the Pitt Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery.

Her expert insight is featured in a recent story on WTAE morning anchor Elena LaQuatra, whose career is a powerful example of how cochlear implant technology can transform lives. A Mt. Lebanon native, Elena lost her hearing as a child due to bacterial meningitis and has risen to become one of Pittsburgh’s leading broadcasters.

Elena also serves on the Board of Directors for Eye & Ear Foundation of Pittsburgh supporting advancements in hearing and vision research, care, and education.

Yesterday the Communication Van team braved the Pittsburgh rain and participated in our first event of the season!

We were hosted by Human Services Center Mon Valley in Turtle Creek. We completed 11 hearing tests and serviced 1 pair of hearing aids!!

Thank you to Pitt Audiology graduate students Cate and Maddie, Dr. Ashley Parker and Dr. Taylor Murray for making this event a success.
