Making Sense with Ed Butowsky takes a closer look at one of the biggest questions surrounding tariffs: are they really responsible for the inflation Americans are seeing? I went category by category through the CPI to see where imported goods actually have enough weight to make a meaningful difference. What I found challenged the argument that tariffs are driving the broader inflation picture. Sometimes the best way to challenge a popular narrative is to look at the numbers yourself.
What happens when a 25% tariff hits a product that barely moves the needle on overall consumer prices? That was one of the questions I wanted to answer in this week's Making Sense with Ed Butowsky. I looked at everything from new vehicles and food to prescription drugs and footwear, and the numbers tell a very different story depending on what is actually being imported. A tariff percentage by itself doesn't tell you the impact on inflation.
