๐ŸŒŠ to National Estuaries Week! ๐ŸŒฟ

Each year, is a celebration of these incredible ecosystems and the benefits estuaries provide. Whatโ€™s an estuary? An estuary is a partially enclosed, coastal water body where freshwater from rivers and streams mixes with salt water from the ocean. They support vast, biodiverse communities of plants and animals, often called the โ€œnurseries of the seaโ€. They are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth, providing a multitude of valuable environmental services that also drive local economies. This special week encourages us to get outside, explore, learn about, enjoy, and take part in protecting the incredible estuaries around the nation that connect communities to the coast. ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŒŠ Did you know that Santa Monica Bay is part of the Santa Monica Bay National Estuary Program (SMBNEP), one of 28 National Estuary Programs created by Congress in 1987 to restore and protect these coastal waters? The Bay Foundation is the nonprofit host entity of SMBNEP, implementing innovative nature-based solutions in and along Santa Monica Bay to increase coastal resilience, enhance ecosystems, and benefit communities. โ˜€๏ธ

This National Estuaries Week, we invite you to get outside and explore your local coast. Join us at an upcoming volunteer event to learn and discover some incredible beach dune ecosystems right along Santa Monica Bay!๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Given this special week, we also want to thank Senators Alex Padilla & Senator Adam Schiff and our U.S. representatives for their continued support of the Santa Monica Bay National Estuary Program, the estuaries, and all they do for Californiaโ€™s communities, economy, and ecosystems. ๐Ÿ’™
