Step one to getting a new kitchen is Demo Day!
The crew removed this outdated kitchen, including the drop ceiling in Portland this week. Yesterday they were already installing the new cabinets. Stay tuned for another brand spankin' new kitchen brought to you by JLS Builders.

A very popular renovation request is to remove the infamous wall between the kitchen and the dining or living area, particularly in cape cod style homes.

This renovation usually requires the help of a structural engineer to confirm beam size and possibly the rerouting of some electrical, but the result is worth it. Depending on the home, this type of renovation will add value to your property.

Here is one we are currently working on in Portland. What a difference this change makes for those who reside here now that the kitchen is open to the dining room. This project also involved the refacing and refinishing (not full replacement) of the kitchen cabinets. Keeping the boxes and just changing the doors and drawer fronts saved this couple nearly 6k compared to completely replacing them!

Sometime in the past 100 years the covered front porch was removed from this house in Portland.

20 years ago, the owners tried to apply for a permit to rebuild the porch but the city declined stating there was not enough set-back available.

Now, the codes have changed enough we can rebuild the porch and restore the look of the house. 🎉

Have you noticed how incredibly expensive it is to replace cabinets? Have you also noticed how no one is willing to refinish them, almost forcing you to spend double to replace them?

Depending on the size of your kitchen, when you are all done with the cost of demo and purchasing the new cabinets and the install, you could be looking at a very large bill. Compared to leaving your cabinets where they are and just giving them a facelift, which could save you 5-10k!

In this case, the clients’ boxes were in great shape but their doors and drawer fronts were not. I ordered new shaker style doors from fastcabinetdoors.com and together with Sherwin Williams we chose the right paints for the project. We then handed it all over to our trusted painter and let him go to town!
