What do you say after days spent standing among the charred remains of people’s homes, breathing in the ashes of their lives? I’m at a loss. Residents in Spokane have spent a week feeling scared, wondering when or if they can go home, and praying for this nightmare to end. Please continue to keep this city in your thoughts.

I recently celebrated 3 years at CBS News! This year brought its fair share of challenges, and also many opportunities for growth. Multiple all-nighters, tough news stories, and long stretches away from home were all made easier thanks to my incredible coworkers. I’m proud of the stories I’ve produced this year and look forward to what’s to come.
Had to give this one a permanent spot on the timeline 💛 Sometimes, you just need a feel-good story -- and when I shot this piece, I REALLY needed one. Caroline's kindness, in spite of her own challenges, is such an inspiration. I could tell by speaking to her neighbors that her positive impact is truly felt in her community. While I was there, people flocked to say hello to her near her Little Free Pep Talks Box. During my interview with Caroline she said, "I think my goal with the Pep Talks Box has just always been for people to feel less alone." She said compliments or kind words won't fix your life, but they can serve as bright spots and joy you can take with you through your day.
Thanks for the assignment, and for all the work you put into this story, Sammi Rappaport.

2026 fire season is underway with several fires burning across California, including the Sandy Fire in Simi Valley.
Today, Portland police held a press conference and identified 49-year-old Bruce Whitman as the suspect who crashed a vehicle into the Multnomah Athletic Club Saturday morning. Investigators said the car was filled with propane tanks and explosive devices. If they’d all detonated, the damage would have been much worse. Whitman had several previous interactions with the Portland Police Bureau Behavioral Health Unit and had a history of being placed on mental health holds, including a recent hold in February 2026. The suspect in the crash was found dead at the scene.

A busy, busy, busy Q1 filled with lots of work travel, but also quality time with colleagues, buying my first home, and fun moments like the Shamrock Run and a hike in the Gorge!

Seeing Savannah Guthrie’s heart-wrenching interview on the TODAY Show this morning took me back to my weeks spent in Tucson in Frebruary covering her mother’s disappearance. At the time, it felt like Nancy Guthrie would be found at any moment. Now, like Savannah, we still hold on to the hope that someone will come forward with information.
