Episode 476 is a conversation with singer songwriter and producer - Such a pleasure to get to jump on the mics with Sam and get to know him through this chat. We talked about Sam’s upbringing in Canada, capturing a feeling in recordings, his approach to songwriting, the gravitational pull he feels towards making music, producing music for others, and more.
Sam’s most two most recent records have been in heavy rotation for me and I’ve been a fan his production work as well so it was really rad to get to do the deep dive with him. Go check out his new record “Sweet Halo Grass” and go see him on tour this summer.

I’ve been meaning to share some of this stuff as I’ve been reflecting on 10 plus years of doing the podcast. I think it’s difficult for me to understand the full scope of the thing and the archive that’s been built without me actually digging through the digital archive.
The first 75 episodes or so were all built more like KEXP studio sessions with in studio performances and interview chunks throughout. I had a fun crew helping me produce them and they make up a large portion of my YouTube catalog. The sessions were a blast and while I miss the live performance aspect, I’m really happy with the direction and the shape things took. Removing the performance allowed for myself and the guest to just focus on the conversation and I think the interviews improved in some due part because of that.
Lots of fond memories at Mountain Air Studios, but the session with Cambrian Explosion definitely stands out. One of my all time favorite Portland bands. You can find the full performance of Innocuous Creatures and 2 others from that session on my Prime Time Cable YouTube channel.

Brooke Smith is the owner/operator of a rad deli and market in Milwaukie, which is home to one of my favorite tuna sandwiches in the Portland area. Brooke has curated such a cool vibe and community in the year and a half that she’s been open in downtown Milwaukie. This was such a great hang with her on the mics, we talked her culinary background, her ideals for opening Good Measure, struggles of being a small business owner, some of her favorite food spots, and more! Episode 475 is available wherever you stream podcasts or you can watch the episode on YouTube. LONG LIVE THE GOOD MEASURE LADY!
