Margo, our 9 year old 50 pound pitty, is a huge fan of music. Her foster family says she’ll sit in the room with them for hours listening to them play. Sometimes Margo will join along with a squeaky toy, but generally she’s just happy to watch. Although we’ve not tested our theory, Margo loves people so much that we suspect she’d be just as happy to watch someone put together a jigsaw puzzle.

Surrendered to the shelter when her family lost their housing, Margo needed help with her skin. Margo, like a lot of pitties, is delicate. She has to eat hypoallergenic food otherwise she breaks out. We started Margo on Apoquel, an allergy medication, which has really helped keep her itch-free. Margo also has arthritis in her knees. Despite this, Margo loves long walks and short jogs. Keeping her on Carprofen, an anti-inflammatory, has helped her stay active. Margo should continue the food, Apoquel and Carprofen long term.

Margo is very friendly with all people, even kids. She loves long eye contact and sneaky face kisses. When not snuggling, Margo will periodically entertain herself with stuffy dissections. She is crate trained, leash trained and potty trained.

Margo has met and gotten along great with several dogs. She seems to prefer other laid back dogs. It’s fair to say that Margo may be dog selective. She’s gotten in a few minor arguments with dogs at parks - we suspect they were too bold for Margo and her arthritic knees, but hard to know for sure. Margo is not a good candidate for dog parks for this reason and we recommend slow introductions with new dog friends. Margo seems indifferent to cats that she’s met.

Margo is heartworm negative and current on her flea and heartworm preventatives. She’s had normal blood work and we just cleaned her teeth. Her adoption fee is $150.

The Grand Ole Opry Girls, aka the Country Pups, our 2 month old pitty puppies, have been shining their boots, fluffing their wigs and tuning their guitars. It’s hard not to be nervous for them as they get ready to meet their new families. But our girls are stars and we’re sure people will notice them as soon as they hit the stage.

Dolly Parton (black and white) may be the smallest in her litter, but she has a huge heart. Playful, funny and brave, she’s a great puppy around the clock - not just from 9 to 5. Reba McEntire is the sweetest puppy. She’s snuggly and patient. Reba enjoys exploring and chasing; typical puppy stuff, nothing Fancy.

The girls are spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on their vaccines and preventatives. All puppies need vaccines every 3 weeks until they are 16 weeks old, so their adopters should make those veterinary appointments right away. Puppies are like country musicians - they need practice to be professionals. Their adopters will need to enroll them in classes and keep up with their training. It’s easier to promise “I Will Always Love You” to a dog that’s not destroying your couch.

We expect the girls to be 50-70 pounds fully grown. As they are pitties, applicants must own their own home or have written permission from a landlord to own a pit bull. Their adoption fees are $400 each.

Empress, our 11 year old 13 pound chihuahua mix, is a typical royal. Sure, she’s the ruler of an entire empire (we are not clear where this empire is and don’t want to offend Empress by asking), but she would never let on that she has a single care in the world. She is very clear about what she wants, and what Empress wants is to be pampered. We’ve been granted by her majesty the task of finding her a home willing to do just that.

Empress was surrendered to the shelter after her person died. Obviously, the shelter is no place for someone as regal as Empress, so we took her in. Empress needed a bit of sprucing up. She had a mouthful of rotten teeth, had yet to be spayed, and we diagnosed her with a heart murmur. The good news is that the murmur appears to be benign. She’s healed from her procedures, has a smile fit for an oil painting, and is much more comfortable.

At home, Empress loves people and likes to cuddle. Potty trained and crate trained, Empress is fairly easy. Like a lot of senior dogs, Empress struggles with transitions. In new situations, she may complain more than normal, until she realizes the accommodations are up to standard. Because she’s a senior dog, Empress would do best with older kids and in a home without too many stairs. Empress walks like a cloud on leash and enjoys a leisurely stroll.

She is good with other dogs of all sizes. Empress is not into contact sports, however. She will play bow and give a royal wave to her housemates, but Empress would likely prefer to live with other laid back dogs. We have not seen Empress with cats.

Empress is an excellent communicator. This manifests in a series of Ewok-like squeaks and grunts and she’ll bark at her person to make her desires known. Typically, her desire is to sleep. Ruling is hard work and apparently requires 20 hours of shut-eye per day.

Empress is heartworm negative and is current on her flea and heartworm preventatives. Her adoption fee is $150.

The Grand Ole Opry Boys aka the Country Pups, our 2 month old pitty puppies, have been rehearsing around the clock for their upcoming gig. We don’t blame them, as this gig is the most important one yet! They are all hoping for a record deal. And by record deal, we mean a brand new home.

Willie Nelson (black and white with one blue eye) is a wiz at leash training and is excited to get on the road again. Hank Williams (brown and white) loves attention, snuggles and tug - and hey, he’s good-lookin. Johnny Cash (all black face) is eager to please and will try to walk the line in obedience class. Waylon Jennings (black with small white spot on nose) loves chase, adventure, and Luckenbach Texas for some reason. Kenny Rogers (mostly white with some black) is brave and friendly; he’s no coward of this county.

Each puppy’s adoption fee is $400. All of the puppies will be spayed or neutered, up to date on their vaccines, and current on flea and heartworm preventatives when adopted. They need vaccines every 3 weeks until they are 16 weeks old, so their adopters should be prepared to make those veterinary appointments AND train your dog. They’re just babies ready to learn.

The Summer Puppies were recently in to receive their microchips, vaccines and deworming. Which means one thing: as summer is coming to an end, so is our time with the puppies. The crew will all be spayed and neutered in 2 weeks, at which point they can go off to their new homes. What better way to say goodbye to summer than to put on a jacket and potty train a Pomchi.

Mosquito enjoys picnics and music festivals. SPF never says no to a ride on a jet ski. Macaroni Salad is a big fan of short shorts. Propane is our only boy and he would love to try lawn darts. Mustard is a wiz at beach volleyball. All of the puppies are sweet, friendly, and playful. Their mom is only 15 pounds and we expect the puppies to be about that size fully grown.

By the time of adoption, the Summer Puppies will have had 2 rounds of vaccines and will be current on flea and heartworm preventatives. All puppies need vaccines every 3 weeks until they are 16 weeks old, so their adopters should be prepared to make those veterinary appointments.

We can’t stop emphasizing this: please don’t adopt a puppy unless you plan on training it. Pomchi’s are adorable, but they don’t know how to do anything unless someone teaches them.

ADOPTED!

Trinity, now Mazzy, our 1 year old Malamute mix was adopted out then returned to the shelter due to urinary incontinence and frequent infections - then she came to us. We had her ultrasounded and sent her to a specialist who did a scope of her urinary tract. She was diagnosed with an ectopic ureter. That means that the tube that leads from her kidney to her bladder was emptying in the wrong place - into her urethra instead of her bladder. She also had abnormal pouching of her bladder that was allowing bacteria to collect. Thanks to for covering the cost of her care in its entirety, we were able to get her into surgery to correct the issue and then get her ready to find her forever home!

While she was healing, Mazzy met her foster’s neighbor, Dana, and he fell in love and quickly applied to adopt! She fit right in with her new human and older husky brother. They match each other’s energy and she gets to spend her time going on lots of adventures with her family, hiking, exploring, and learning every day! She also loves to cuddle and make herself comfortable right on her human’s lap. As every bigger dog should, in our opinion.

Marcie, our 2 year old 11 pound Chiweenie, was found by the side of a busy road. She was limping, so the shelter staff worried Marcie had been hit by a car. Since helping injured dogs is our passion (in case we haven’t made that clear), we happily took her in. Great news, the limp quickly resolved. She wasn’t badly injured after all! Less good news? Our Marcie was pregnant.

Marcie did a fantastic job raising her puppies, and the Refreshment Litter have all found their homes. Since it takes 8 weeks to raise puppies, we’ve had a lot of time to get to know Marcie. It’s not an exaggeration to say she’s an A+ breed-standard Chiweenie. Now that Marcie is healed from her spay, it’s time to find her a home too.

If you’ve ever known a Chiweenie, you know that they love their people. Marcie is happiest around humans and befriends everyone easily (even kids!). She is cuddly, playful, gentle and is up for doing whatever her humans are doing. In fact, Marcie may insist on being included.

At home, Marcie is crate and potty trained. She is good with other dogs and cats. Marcie’s interests include squeaky toys, sunbathing, snacks and squirrel contemplation. Out and about, Marcie is working on her leash manners. She excitedly barks at other dogs that she wants to meet. Since Marcie is smart and very food motivated, we suspect she’ll quickly learn how to be more subtle about wanting to make friends.
