๐๐ง FALL INTO NEW SKILLS: PSYCHOLOGY!
One of our psychology services is Social Skills Groups using Group Theraplayยฎโa fun, play-based group for elementary-aged children who benefit from extra support with friendships, emotional regulation, and confidence. ๐
Through games, movement, and cooperative play, children practice:
๐ฑ Turn-taking & cooperation
๐ฑ Emotional regulation
๐ฑ Flexibility & frustration tolerance
๐ฑ Positive peer interactions
๐ฑ Confidence in social situations
Children learn social skills by doing, connecting, and having fun together! ๐
Social Skills Groups are one of our psychology services, along with PCIT, psychological testing, and pediatric counseling.
Book of the Month ๐
October's Book of the Month is Room on the Broom!
Did you know the vowel team โooโ makes two main sounds?
The most common way is โooโ like in room and broom
The next is โooโ like in cook, book, look, took
BUT! It can also say โoreโ when the letter r is at the end of the word like door and floor
And finally and least common, it can say โuhโ like in blood and flood!
When in doubt, try out the different sounds, as you keep reading these words, your brain will keep that information and their pronunciation will become natural!
The English language is so interesting!

Losing Your Place on the Page? Try a Reading Tracking Tool
It's easy to get lost while reading โ eyes drift to a beautiful picture on the page, lines blur together, and suddenly you've read the same sentence three times (or skipped one entirely). Using a simple tracking tool can help readers stay anchored to exactly where they are on the page.
For beginning readers, tracking with a finger or a fun pointer does double duty: it builds the habit of keeping their place and encourages them to point to each sound as they decode. It turns "reading" into something they can see and touch, one sound at a time.
For more advanced readers, a page full of small text can feel overwhelming fast. A bookmark under each line or a reading window that frames just one line at a time narrows their focus to exactly where they need to be. Instead of relying on their eyes alone to track where they are on the page, they get a physical anchor that reduces frustration and keeps them moving forward with confidence.
Try one of these tracking tools:
Your finger
A bookmark
A reading window
Or, for a little extra fun โ a witch's finger! ๐งโโ๏ธ

๐๐ FALL INTO NEW SKILLS: READING!
Your Child Doesn't Have to Love Reading
Does your child avoid books? Get frustrated during reading? Or insist that they hate reading?
You're not aloneโand it doesn't necessarily mean they'll always feel that way. ๐
When reading feels difficult, children can start associating books with frustration instead of enjoyment. Sometimes, building confidence comes before building a love of reading.
A few ways to make reading feel more approachable:
๐ Let them choose books about topics they're interested in
๐ง Listen to audiobooks together
๐ค Celebrate small reading wins
๐ Keep reading practice short and positive
๐ฌ Talk about the story instead of focusing only on getting every word right
And remember: needing extra support with reading isn't a failure. The right instruction can help children strengthen foundational skills while rebuilding their confidence along the way.
At Sunbreak, our Reading Specialist provides individualized reading support to help students develop their skills and become more confident readers.
Every reader's journey looks a little different. We're here to help them find their next step. ๐

A new school year has begun, and it's important to reinstate or begin some routines of reading and literacy skill-building at home. We have 5 easy ways to start getting your child prepared to make some great strides as a reader this school year:
Tip #1 Set up a cozy reading space in the house!
Find a cozy nook in your home with adequate light, have your child or teen help decorate the area so the space really feels like theirs, and put a timer so your child has an idea of how much time they have left.
Feeling like your child may need some extra reading support this year? Schedule a free 30 minute reading screening at Sunbreak Therapy Services with one of our reading specialists and start the school year off right with reading intervention support!

๐ Back-to-School Boost: This One Is For the Parents, Too. ๐
As you're getting backpacks ready, buying school supplies, adjusting bedtimes, and preparing for another school year, here's your reminder:
Your child doesn't have to have everything figured out before the first day.
And neither do you.
Maybe your child isn't reading at the level you hoped they'd be.
Maybe mornings are still a struggle.
Maybe they're nervous about making friends.
Maybe they're working on communicating their needs.
Maybe they're still learning how to manage big emotions.
That's okay.
School readiness isn't about checking every box or having a โperfectly preparedโ child. It's about meeting your child where they are, celebrating their strengths, and supporting the skills they're still developing. ๐ฑ
So as you prepare for the school year, remember to give yourself some grace, too.
You are allowed to have questions.
You are allowed to ask for help.
You are allowed to take things one step at a time.
And you don't have to navigate it all alone. ๐
At Sunbreak, our team is here to support children and families as they learn, grow, communicate, connect, and thrive.
Here's to a new school year, and all the little wins along the way. โจ
