I thought about speech and thought for Yom Kippur. Our tradition identifies as speaking beings. Interesting because what is essential according to this view is not our capacity to think but our capacity to speak. To me the suggests that speech is more valuable perhaps because it requires the thoughts to be filtered and clarified before they are shared with others. The jewish tradition has conflicting impulses. One is to honor law and norms and to express righteous and justice through those. But the other is a radical break from the world that is. Think Abraham who left behind the world and gods that he knew. Think about Moses who destroys the society that raised him.
