Watch how staff treat the people who already live there.
In a good community, residents walk up unprompted. They tell you about their life. They ask, “When are you moving in?” They always, always do.
A red flag is touring with someone — even the executive director — who has no time for the people whose home this already is. You’re there to care for them and support them… and they don’t even see them.
A community that engages with residents on the tour is a very good indicator of the care your loved one will get when they’re living there.
That’s what we watch for when we tour with families.

Meet Bess, owner of Care and Keeping. For nearly eight years she’s walked families through the move to senior living with one quiet promise: you’ll feel informed, empowered, and sure you found the right fit.
When she’s not with clients, she’s President of the Portland Elder Care Council and just wrapped five years on the OSRAA board. All of it aimed at raising the standard of care for seniors across the region.
