Someone recently asked me “I don’t think I’m ovulating, can I still get pregnant?”
We’ve talked about how to tell WHEN you’re ovulating before - pay attention to your cervical mucus, Mittelschmerz, and other symptoms you can track to recognize your own fertile days.
But if you’re concerned that you aren’t ovulating, or if you’re connecting having a period to being able to get pregnant, it gets more complicated.
First, can you get pregnant if you aren’t ovulating? No. If there’s no egg to fertilize, conception can’t happen. That’s why I’ve said understanding your cycle, and not just your period, is key to understanding your fertility.
Can you ovulate and not get a period? Yes. This can happen postpartum. Some people ovulate before their period returns after having a baby.
Can you have a period and not ovulate? Also yes. You can have a period without releasing an egg. It can look and feel like a normal period, which is why irregular ovulation can go unnoticed if you’re not tracking your own signs.
When patients come to me, it is often the first time someone has ever asked them in-depth questions about their period and their overall cycles.
Now is the time to schedule your free consultation if you are trying to conceive. Call (503) 442-1205 to schedule.

“Erin is an incredible acupuncturist and an even more amazing person.
She is calming, knowledgeable, and deeply supportive. During my appointments, she was real emotional support, not just a practitioner.
I always felt cared for, grounded, and encouraged. So grateful to her. I have recommended her to close friends and family!” - J.N.

This question has come up several times in my acupuncture clinic, so let’s talk about whether wearing socks really impacts your fertility when you are trying to get pregnant.

And for most people, doing a strict elimination diet for months just is not realistic.
It is time consuming, restrictive, and often adds more stress to an already full plate.
So instead of trying to cut everything out and adhere to a plan that can quickly become overwhelming, try this:
Start paying attention.
I don’t want you to track calories or macros. Instead, start noticing what you are eating and how you feel afterward.
After a week or two of keeping a food journal, you’ll start to see patterns.
There may be some foods that seem to leave you feeling bloated or exhausted - even if those foods are considered “healthy”
How your body responds to foods is especially important when we’re talking about inflammation, hormone balance, and fertility.
If you feel overwhelmed by conflicting food advice or unsure how nutrition fits into your fertility picture, you don’t have to do it alone.
I am here to help you make sense of the signals your body is giving you - schedule a free 20 minute consultation today.

It is always lovely to read kind words from patients!
“I’ve been going to Erin for two years now.
She has helped me get pregnant twice, and also helped support me during the end of one pregnancy (preparing for labor). She is competent (most important), but also so kind and warm!
Jasmine is also fantastic, helpful and kind.
They even had flowers for me when I came in on my birthday! Who does that? Erin and Jasmine do!
It’s these little things that make you feel cared for and seen! What more could you want from your experience?!
I highly recommend them!! Especially if you are dealing with infertility or IVF!” - J.C.

If you’ve downloaded an app to track your fertility, and you’re following it closely, but you still aren’t getting pregnant, it might be because your cycle doesn’t fall within the app’s expectations.
That’s not a failure on your body’s part, it’s just that apps are math and averages, and our bodies don’t always fit into neat boxes.
Fertility and period tracking apps function better with people who have regular and predictable cycles. If your cycles are at all irregular, then you likely won’t get useable information about your ovulation until AFTER it happens.
If you’re wondering if you can get pregnant while not ovulating, the answer is no. Ovulation, an egg being released, is required, no matter how regular your period is. Getting a period every month is NOT a sign of ovulation.
If you are having any of the following signs/symptoms it could be helpful to chat with me or your gynecologist about ovulation: :
Cycles that are unusually short or long
Little to no change in cervical mucus when you think you are ovulating
No shift in basal body temperature throughout the cycle
Apps can be beneficial, but I also encourage my patients to be proactive about tracking their ovulation and not just their periods.
Once we understand your menstrual cycle, we can work on bringing your body into balance so your ovulation becomes more predictable.
