"What excites me most is what the food center represents for our community," said Lindsay Grosvenor, Oregon Food Bank-Southeast Oregon Services regional manager. "Neighbors helped shape this project from the beginning, and Wednesday night we got to celebrate that work together."
The center will share a block with River Bend Place housing and Valley Family Health Care's Fortner Medical Clinic, placing food assistance, housing and medical services within walking distance of one another.

In a recent interview with Columbia Community Connection, Columbia Gorge Food Bank Executive Director Breen Goodwin shared how rising costs, a strained social safety net and policy decisions are impacting families across the Columbia Gorge and our local economy.
Hunger is a statewide issue — and communities across Oregon are coming together to make sure everyone has access to the food they need.
“Food insecurity is about poverty and a lack of resources, but the root cause is policy. Our most vulnerable populations suffer the most, but it impacts our local economy overall.”
The Columbia Gorge Food Bank serves Wasco, Hood River and Sherman counties, helping keep food moving to neighbors across the region. And there are many ways to get involved from donating your garden’s surplus to supporting local hunger-relief efforts like Empty Bowls on Sept. 25. 💚

En este Mes Nacional de la Herencia Latine, destacamos a Coalición Fortaleza una organización liderada por mujeres de color que trabaja para reconstruir hogares, recuperar tierras y fortalecer la comunidad en Rogue Valley tras los incendios forestales de 2020.
Su cofundadora Erica Alexia Ledesma, creció en el sur de Oregón, en una comunidad de trabajadores agrícolas y forestales. Después de que el incendio Alameda destruyera cientos de viviendas, su comunidad se unió para recuperar sus vecindarios.
Coalición Fortaleza está reimaginando lo que es posible: viviendas propiedad de los residentes y huertos comunitarios donde se cultivan maíz, calabaza, chiles y tomatillos.
Su convicción: las personas más cercanas al problema son también las más cercanas a la solución.
"La educación es poder", afirma Erica. "Cuando aprendemos juntos, somos capaces de idear soluciones adaptadas a nuestra propia comunidad".
Es hora de que juntos Platiquemos del Hambre, y eso implica repensar quiénes tienen la capacidad de definir las políticas que determinan quién accede a la tierra, a la vivienda y a los alimentos.
