HUGE NEWS!!

Tate and Casper have been out of oxygen and back in the main cage for two days! The boys are doing amazingly well, and we are so happy for them.

I am superstitiously hesitating to put the oxygen concentrator away, and the house sounds too quiet without the constant hum and rhythmic hiss of it running, but it's a quiet I am happy to get used to.

Acacia and her mini me, one of Meadowrue's daughters. We were able to get blood drawn on Acacia at her appt yesterday, and we are hoping the results will give us some answers.

Acacia is trying to set the record for most expensive sanctuary rat. So far she has cost us $2368 since her arrival at the beginning of June. If you can help us keep up with her growing medical costs, please see below! We appreciate it so much!

Casper is being a good emotional support buddy for Tate. Both boys have been spending time out of oxygen and they are currently doing well. However, a few days ago Tate had a very sudden setback with severely labored breathing during their neb treatment. Thankfully increasing the oxygen flow rate helped him stabilize quickly, and he has regained all the progress he had made. We are very close to both Casper and Tate being off oxygen for good.

We have Yarrow, Checkermallow, Sparrow, and Lady Cheddarton at the vet today for rechecks. Our medical fund is currently in the negative by $228. If you are able, we appreciate every donation, and every one helps us provide care to all our sanctuary residents.

The elusive Bean!

Bean is a bit of a cryptid. Only seen as a blur from the corner of your eye. A shadow in the dark. It's rare to see her holding still in the presence of a human, and rarer still to get a picture. She really is a cute little thing! (Also, did anyone else parse the tip of the star as a hole in her ear? Every time I look at it, that's the first thing I see. I outlined it on the second slide.)

Update for Acacia - she saw our vet yesterday for some rads since she has been increasingly inappetent since the middle of last week. We didn't see a clear reason, but we were able to rule out a hernia as the cause of her little mass on her left flank. All her intestines are exactly where they are supposed to be. She did have some food matter in her cecum and ileus, so she is eating a little bit when we're not watching. We had seen that her normal Oxbow and Nutriberries were disappearing, and she wasn't just stashing them, so that checks out, but she still turns her head away from anything we try to offer her. With little to go on, we're trying some medication changes. We are taking her off of any meds she can potentially do without, and we're adding cisapride for gut motility, and then she goes back in on Friday for another evaluation.

Acacia and Hot Pocket's visits yesterday cost us $477. That puts our medical fund at -$378. Can you help us make up the difference? All donations go directly toward the sanctuary's medical care!

Acacia is back at the vet today for an emergency appointment and X-rays. She is still on a hunger strike and on Sunday evening she was very drooly, which is a sign of nausea. We can't find a reason for it, so it's time for more diagnostics. Otherwise she is bright and alert. She's passing stool. We can't feel any weird lumps (aside from the lump found at her last visit). I've had her out with me on the couch every evening and she climbs and explores.

She is now on meds to help with the nausea, and the drooling resolved, but she's still not eating. We have no idea what we might find today, but we're hoping to get some answers and a plan.

Hot Pocket is also at the clinic today for her post op recheck. She has healed well and there is no sign of more abscesses.

We expect the visits today to cost us in excess of $500 for (mostly) Acacia's emergency exam and rads. If you are able to help us cover our costs, please see below! Every little bit helps!

Rogue here with some SDAV updates!

Both Casper and Tate successfully spent yesterday out of oxygen! We put them back in overnight for some additional support, which Tate appreciated. Casper is ready to be completely off oxygen, which is absolutely amazing remembering how bad he was a few weeks ago. It's been a long road, but we're finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The youngest litters here are now nearly weaned, which means new hosts for the virus will be available, but young and healthy rats are generally much less impacted and are often asymptomatic.

Our vet is looking into options for single pathogen testing and whether we can effectively pool samples to get broader coverage so we can ensure the virus is really and truly gone. A single positive result is useful, but a single negative result only tells us about an individual. To be confident that the rats are virus free, we need results from a wide number of individuals. We anticipate we still have a few weeks to go, but we are getting there.
