It’s been a big week for menopause, with Congress holding a hearing focused on the gaps in menopause care, research and workplace support.

For as long as we’ve offered menopause care at Age Management Center, we’ve seen how deeply this transition can affect women—at work, at home and in their personal relationships. In fact, one in ten women will leave the workforce during the peak of her career because of menopause symptoms.

We’ve also seen the relief women feel when someone finally listens, takes their symptoms seriously and reassures them that they are not imagining things—and they are not alone.

Too often, by the time a woman finds us, she has already seen multiple providers—sometimes as many as six—and has felt dismissed at every turn.

It has taken far too long for our country to recognize that women need and deserve better menopause care. But it’s not too late to change that.

For many women, this goes far beyond managing hot flashes and other symptoms. Comprehensive menopause care should also consider the health risks women face as they age, including osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease—the leading cause of death among American women. We also urgently need more research into the relationship between menopause, hormonal changes and Alzheimer’s disease.

If you’re struggling with symptoms, please talk to your healthcare provider. And if you don’t feel heard, schedule a complimentary screening call with our team. We’re here to listen—and to help.

Advice I give my female patients every day: lift weights. Here’s why!

Strength training helps keep your bones strong enough to support you for the rest of your life.

As estrogen declines, particularly during and after menopause, women can lose bone more quickly. This increases the risk of osteopenia, osteoporosis and fractures—especially in the hip, spine and wrist.

Lifting weights places healthy stress on your bones, encouraging them to maintain and build stronger tissue. It also strengthens the muscles that support you and improves your balance, which may help protect you if you fall.

You don’t need to lift the heaviest weights in the gym. Start where you are, learn how to do it safely and build gradually. Ideally, begin before midlife—but please know that it’s never too late to benefit.

If you have osteoporosis or have previously broken a bone, speak with your healthcare provider about adding weights to your exercise program.

RIP Gloria Steinem. Women around the world have lost a powerful advocate and ally, but we have gained so much from the work she did and the legacy she leaves behind.

For decades, Gloria Steinem challenged women to expect more—for themselves, for one another, and from the institutions that shape their lives.

Healthcare is part of that conversation.

For many women, midlife brings a new willingness to ask questions, speak up and stop accepting things simply because we’ve been told they’re “just part of getting older.”

Women deserve to be listened to. To have their symptoms taken seriously. To have access to good information, appropriate treatment, and care that recognizes that women’s health needs change throughout their lives.

Perhaps one way we can honor her legacy is to keep asking questions, keep advocating for ourselves and for other women, and keep expecting better.

Testosterone replacement therapy can offer tremendous benefits—but it isn’t something that should be prescribed and forgotten.

In some men, testosterone can raise blood counts beyond the normal range, increasing the risk of blood clots and serious complications.

Regular lab work and in-person care allow your provider to identify changes early and adjust your treatment before they become a problem.

If you’re experiencing low energy, fatigue, brain fog, or other symptoms of low testosterone, call us at (207) 774-1356 to schedule a complimentary screening call and testosterone test.

You’re going to be hearing a lot more about intrinsic capacity—and we’re excited about that!

Put simply, it’s a way of looking at how well your body and mind are working—from your strength, movement and energy to your memory, mood, vision and hearing.

It looks beyond disease and asks a better question: What are your body and mind actually capable of?

This is exactly what we do at Age Management Center. We measure strength, cardiovascular fitness, muscle, bone and metabolic health, energy and cognition—establishing a baseline so we can identify changes early and take action.

We don’t deny that aging is inevitable. But frailty and many illnesses associated with aging are not. The more we know in advance, the more opportunity we have to do something about it.

So, instead of only asking how long you might live, ask: What will my body and mind be capable of during those years?

To learn more about your intrinsic capacity and how it may be improved, call us and ask to speak with one of our Longevity experts.

In the meantime, read this fascinating New York Times article about intrinsic capacity.

Please don’t simply “wait and see” when your blood sugar starts creeping up.

Ask to have your A1C and other metabolic markers checked, especially if you’re in perimenopause. Insulin resistance can quietly increase your risk of type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, heart disease, stroke and other serious health problems—but once we know what’s happening, there is often a great deal we can do to change course.

That may include nutrition, sleep, movement, building muscle and reducing visceral fat. And if your results and overall health suggest that a GLP-1 medication could help, don’t be afraid to have that conversation. It’s one possible medical tool—not a failure or an easy way out.

Start by speaking with your primary care provider. If you aren’t getting the answers you need, call us at (207) 774-1356 for a complimentary screening call.
