Christi and I don't teach Marriage Magic from a textbook. We teach it from every fight we've had and found our way back from. That's the only kind of marriage coaching worth listening to.

Intimacy doesn't leave a marriage all at once. It leaks out one skipped conversation, one tired night, one "later" at a time — until two people who love each other feel like roommates. It leaks back in the same slow way.

"Who wants to look back on their lives, when the sun is getting low, and be filled with memories of yelling, blaming, lying, and fighting? Who wants that to be the highlight reel?" No one. So why do so many of us spend our best years there.

Kids don't need a perfect marriage. They need to see two people who disagree and still stay kind to each other. That's the actual lesson they're learning every single day, whether you mean to teach it or not.

Trust doesn't come back because someone says "I'm sorry" once. It comes back through a hundred small, boring, consistent moments after the sorry. That's the part nobody wants to hear, and it's the part that actually works.
