Wildfire is a public health crisis.

Right now we are witnessing several catastrophic fires destroying homes, devastating communities, and erasing whole forested ecosystems. Wildfire smoke expands this devastation tenfold, carrying its impacts far beyond the burn zone. This smoke creates hazardous air quality in our cities, disruptions to outdoor recreation and daily life, and unhealthy working conditions for millions.

Wildfire smoke is linked to asthma attacks, heart and lung disease, pregnancy complications, and increased emergency room visits. As wildfire seasons become longer and more intense, protecting public health means thinking beyond and before the flames.

Building healthier, more resilient forests through science-based stewardship can help reduce the severity of future wildfires and the harmful smoke that follows.

What can a tree tell us about Oregon’s history? More than you might think. 🌲

At this month’s Forest Pub, historian David-Paul B. Hedberg explored the remarkable stories behind Oregon’s heritage trees and how these living landmarks connect us to place, memory, and history.

Thank you to the more than 150 people who joined us for the program, and the more than 80 who started the evening with a walking tour of heritage trees in NW Portland’s Couch Park!

We loved sharing this evening with the Oregon Historical Society and everyone who came out to explore the stories rooted in the trees around us.

As members of the IF/THEN® Champions Network we are happy to highlight Women in STEM each month.

Meet Earyn McGee! A Herpetologist Committed to diversity and inclusion. Her research focuses on how drought affects lizards in arid environments and how social media can be used to increase the representation of African American women in natural resources careers. She shares her passion for lizards with others through a fun interactive game, where she gets to teach people cool facts about the lizards she makes a career of studying, while shifting the idea of what it means to be a scientist.
