It’s Tuesday morning. Your accountant calls. It’s bad news.
Their data was breached over the weekend, and your company’s entire financial picture was just leaked to the entire internet.
Competitors can see what you’re up to. Bad actors may have access to sensitive login credentials. And worst of all, this was all avoidable.
So, before you hire a service provider, ask if they’re SOC 2 compliant.
SOC 2 certification is rigorous. To pass, independent third-party auditors spend months verifying that an organization’s cybersecurity measures are both in place, and actually work in practice.
We wrote about it 👇
Click to learn what SOC 2 means and how it can be the line between a trusted partner and a liability.

The answers were strangely consistent.
Payroll. Tax. Financial reporting.
“After I hit submit, my brain starts inventing problems that don’t exist.”

Now you’ve got almost a full year’s worth of data to compare with.
Don’t wait until the end of the year to revisit the plan.

What’s the difference between a CFO and an accountant?
Clients often come to us asking about fractional CFO services, but after a brief conversation, we discover that they’re better off establishing fundamental systems before looking for that degree of high-level expertise.
Let’s start with what CFOs aren’t:
❌ Bookkeepers (they’re entry-level professionals who track day-to-day expenses, and handle things like accounts payable or bank reconciliations)
❌ Accountants (they’re mid-level professionals who review the work of bookkeepers, compile financial reports, and officially close your books at the end of the month)
✅ CFOs are senior-level experts. They provide high-level guidance, establish key performance indicators, and provide crucial advice on rightsizing and cost-cutting.
Bookkeepers and accountants help navigate day-to-day and month-to-month operations, while CFOs bring forward-looking strategic advice that guides you toward growth and sustainability.
Businesses with at least $500k or $1M revenue certainly need a bookkeeper or accountant, but probably don’t need a CFO. They’re better suited to Series A or Series B startups or businesses with many millions in revenue.
