Build on your foundational skills in this hands-on stone setting workshop. You’ll learn each step of creating a bezel setting for a cabochon stone, using soldering and fabrication techniques. Adding gemstones into enameled jewelry will take your designs to another level of color and sparkle, but it can be a tricky process unless you know the tricks of the trade. In this class, you’ll learn not only the beautiful cloisonne process but also learn foolproof soldering of findings and settings. Building prong/basket settings from scratch can be a frustrating and time consuming process. This class will teach you a modern version that you can construct more quickly, and results in an elegant, clean design. See all our classes or register at https://www.cmaguild.org/makerspace

This class is geared towards learning to carve using a flexshaft and basic bench tools. Students will carve a rough piece into a highly polished jewelry sized gem ready to be worn or set into a piece of jewelry. Suitable stones for carving will be discussed and stones suitable for class work will be available. Students are welcome to bring their own stones to carve. Slabs of Jasper or agate are best, and 1⁄4” or thicker is best.

The two days will be spent carving a design that includes all the basic carving techniques: slab trimming, drilling, grooving, shaping, concave plus convex surfaces, then taking the piece through the stages of grinding, sanding and up to a high polish. Students take home the tool kit to continue their new carving skills at home.

Learn the basics of sand casting by sand casting a ring from start to finish. Ring blanks in various designs from sizes 5-10 will be provided. Students will learn how to make clean impressions, achieve successful pours & how to clean/finish the castings.

Jennifer Raney is a jewelry artist based in Troutdale, Oregon, who has been creating jewelry
since the 1990s. Her journey began with stringing, wire work, and fusing, eventually expanding
to working with silver metal clay, traditional silversmithing, and enamel. She became a senior
certifying instructor with ArtClay World in 2012 and has been teaching small, focused classes in
silver metal clay ever since. Over the years, she has earned multiple awards in metal clay
competitions and continues to study with fellow artists to evolve her skills and inspire her
creative practice.

If you are looking for great ways to add texture and surface design to your
metal creations, this is the workshop for you.We’ll make samples in copper and
brass for you to explore the many ways to add designs simply and elegantly.
Starting with ferric chloride, photo etching paper (PNP blue) and paint pens,
we’ll create sheet metal patterns. Then we’ll texture more metal using a variety
of dried botanicals, brass texture plates (made from etching with ferric
chloride!) and other materials to create intricate patterns. Finally, we’ll dive into
using flex shaft burs and bits, plus needle files to create sharp relief into
finished designs, especially great for three dimensional pieces like rings.
