Amplifying underrepresented voices in the arts. The Abbey is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit event space. https://linktr.ee/AlbertaAbbey

The Alberta Abbey is a converted 100-year-old church that now serves the arts, music and creative needs of Portland. A large 400 seat auditorium, 300 person Ballroom and piano lounge all make great event spaces, and the hidden nooks and crannies of the building have been turned into artist studios, offices, and creative spaces.

We're just about 30 minutes out from opening doors for this month's MainStage Open Mic and we can't wait to see who shows up today.

Every month(ish) we welcome people of all ages, genres, and performance experience levels to bring their material to the main Abbey stage. There is some backline available and everyone gets to perform with professional stage lighting and amplification. It's a great chance for experienced performers to test out new material and for new performers to get used to being up on stage.

We also welcome you to come and check it out - even if you don't want to perform! This is a great community of supportive and creative artists and we'd love to welcome you into it.

Tonight, we invite you to gather with us for an evening of music that nourishes the spirit and celebrates the timeless voice of the kora.

For centuries, the kora has carried stories, history, and devotion across West Africa. With 21 strings and a voice that is both luminous and deeply grounding, it has accompanied generations of griots, the keepers of oral tradition whose music preserves memory, wisdom, and culture.

Grammy nominated kora master Youssoupha Sidibe's music grows from that lineage while weaving together traditional West African music and the Sufi devotional traditions of his Senegalese homeland. His performances are rooted in joy, reverence, and the belief that music has the power to bring people together in love and peace.

Opening the evening is interdisciplinary vocalist and performer Kavita Kat Macmillan, whose work weaves together mantra, ritual, sound yoga, and embodied movement. Rooted in devotional singing and creative awakening, her performances invite deep listening, authentic expression, and connection with ourselves, one another, and the living world.

Doors: 6:30 PM

We're about to get started, so this is your last call if you've been thinking about stopping by.

The future of the Moda Center has sparked a lot of conversation this week, and we're glad Alberta Abbey can be a place where those conversations happen in person. Open forums like this give people a chance to listen, ask questions, and share their perspective directly with the people serving our city.

Today's town hall with District 2 Councilors and the City Administrator runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Alberta Abbey.

It's free and open to all community members! Some light snacks and drinks will be provided.

The Abbey just received an organ transplant! A Hammond B3, Leslie speaker and all, has joined our backline and is ready for the musicians who play here.

It comes to us from a very special place. Our staff is made up of artists and artisans, and our facilities manager, Ben Kreusser, is no exception: champion of our 100-year-old building by day, organ collector and restorer by night. Ben was kind enough to provide this beautiful instrument for our onsite collection, and it arrived tuned, restored, and ready to play. Thank you, Ben! πŸ’œ

Keep an ear out at our upcoming shows. The warm, swirling sound of the Hammond B3 has been at the heart of gospel, jazz, soul, and rock for seventy years. We're looking forward to hearing it echo through our hallowed halls, and we hope you are too!

πŸ–€ Happy Juneteenth! πŸ–€

Today we honor freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward healing, for ourselves, our families, and our community.

This evening, we invite you to spend the holiday with us experiencing something deeper than celebration: true reflection and renewal.

Join us for Healing to Love, an intimate one-woman theatrical experience created and performed by Crystal Marion. Through spoken word, storytelling, music, and spiritual reflection, this three-act journey moves from emotional pain to self-restoration and love. It's rooted in one woman's lived experience as a Black woman, yet it speaks to anyone who has ever loved deeply, grieved, or longed for peace and wholeness.
