Breathwork ๐ŸŒธ Embodiment ๐ŸŒธ Thoughtwork

05/04/2022

The moment arrives.
โ €
Itโ€™s there on your calendar staring back at you.
โ €
Time to write that email, create the module for your new program, work the kinks out of your marketingโ€ฆ
โ €
You sit down with a blank google doc and the best intentions, but then the chatter begins.
โ €
Just a subtle whisper at first.
You shake it off and try to think a more productive thought.
โ €
That works for a moment, but then itโ€™s back, and this time it brought friends.
Before you know it, youโ€™re in a full-on spin. Gah!
โ €
And try as you might to muscle past it with your thinking, sometimes more thinking just means more stuck.
โ €
In these moments, breathwork can be the secret sauce for cutting through the chatter and tapping into your inner wisdom (itโ€™s always there beneath the noise!).
โ €
While it would be wonderful if you could take an hour to drop into a meditative breathwork session with your favorite breathwork facilitator ๐Ÿ˜‰, that isnโ€™t always possible.
โ €
The next best thing? Take five minutes to do a short activating breath (like the one shown here) that helps clear the chatter.

Next time you get stuck in a thought loop, ๐—ง๐—ฅ๐—ฌ ๐—ง๐—›๐—œ๐—ฆ!
โ €
Anyone who has been there knows how agitating it can be. But what exactly is happening? ๐Ÿ˜ซ
โ €
In a nutshell, we have a thought that creates a strong emotion (often unpleasant).
โ €
Instead of letting the emotion (energy) run its course and discharge, we inadvertently use the energy to refuel the original thought (or one closely related), reigniting the negative emotion.
โ €
Next time you recognize this pattern, try interrupting it instead.
โ €
Start by noticing the sensations in your body that the repetitive thought-feeling pattern creates.
โ €
Describe them to yourself. Do you notice them in your throat? Your chest? Your stomach? Are they hot or cold? Dense or light? Moving or static?
โ €
Then inhale deeply for a four-count into the part of the body where you feel them the most. Exhale for an eight count. ๐Ÿซ
โ €
Repeat this breath pattern as you observe the sensations in your body, noticing how they move, change, etc.
โ €
As your mind starts to wander back to the troubling thought, gently guide it back to focusing on your breath and observing sensations.
โ €
Stay with it until the feeling starts to dissipate.
โ €
Let me know how it works for you!

We heal when we give our bodies the tools, permission, and space to do so.
โ €
๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ต๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ is the tool I love most.
โ €
All you have to do is breathe, and the body takes care of the rest.
โ €
It moves stuck energy and emotions.
โ €
It releases trauma stored in the body.
โ €
It surfaces blocks that hold us back and keep us playing small.
โ €
It unhooks our minds from the chatter and stimulates different parts of our brain, bringing us clarity.
โ €
Experience it for yourself!

Send me your reading recommendations! Iโ€™m whipping through my quarantine reading stack and need some new ideas. TIA! โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜˜

Well, this was a timely book to come up on my stack.

One thing, in particular, has struck a chord with me at this time. Namely this...it isnโ€™t personal.

Other people get divorced, fret over their kidsโ€™ screen time, or feel lonely during quarantine.

When weโ€™re in it, it feels so unique and personal. But if we draw back to the 10,000-foot level we can start to reframe our situation in the context of the shared human experience. We can start to take things less personally. We are not alone in our suffering.

As Pema says, โ€œIf I really connect with my jealousy, my anger, or my prejudice, I find myself standing in the shoes of humanity.โ€

This is so comforting to me right now.

These are surreal times. If your brain is telling you that you need to seek solace outside of yourself and need a drink to escape, youโ€™re not alone.

Take a beat and remind yourself that we are all in this with you.

We disconnect from ourselves in so many different ways. Sometimes itโ€™s deliberate. Other times automatic.
โ €
We avoid discomfort by numbing with food, alcohol, Netflix, social media.
โ €
We tell ourselves that itโ€™s stupid to feel a certain way.
โ €
We criticize ourselves for mistakes.
โ €
We ignore our intuition.
โ €
We say yes when we mean no.
โ €
We blame ourselves.
โ €
We attach our worth to our weight, our income, our accomplishments.
โ €
Why is any of this a problem?
โ €
Disconnection begets disconnection. It leads to more numbing. It can put you at a higher risk for depression and anxiety.
โ €
Mindfulness is the antidote to disconnection. It requires paying attention to your thoughts and how you talk to yourself and noticing when and why you numb. Sometimes we donโ€™t notice until later that weโ€™ve slipped into autopilot. As we become more aware we can choose differently.
โ €
Right now Iโ€™m reading the book in this photo (Good Morning, I Love You by Shauna Shapiro, PHD). It takes the woo out of mindfulness and backs it up with science.

I saw this image at my sonโ€™s school the other day and I had to laugh. Itโ€™s so accurate! Sometimes life isnโ€™t what we think it should be. But instead of accepting that as part of the deal, we think it should be different. We get stuck in blame or self judgment. But what if we expected things to go as planned half the time and for things to take unexpected turns half the time? Would the unexpected things seem like less of a problem? Tell me what you think!
