Most people visit Kyoto and never find this place.
Just steps from Roku Kyoto in the northern foothills of the city sits the Shozan Garden — a landscape four centuries in the making. In 1615, the sh**un Tokugawa Ieyasu granted this land to Honami Koetsu, a master calligrapher and potter who gathered artists, scholars, and craftsmen here and helped give rise to the Rinpa school of Japanese painting. One of the most celebrated artistic traditions in Japanese history started on this hillside. The Shozan Resort was built on part of that same land in 1951.
Today guests at Roku Kyoto can walk those same paths — past ancient pines, a still pond, a pagoda, and a Buddhist temple hall with a gilded altar that has been drawing quiet visitors for centuries. There's usually an entrance fee. For Roku Kyoto guests, it's free. You just have to know to ask.

The birds at Cape Kidnappers have absolutely zero interest in you. Thousands of Australasian Gannets, nesting on a clifftop above Hawke's Bay, going about their business like you're not even there. They dive from 40 metres and hit the water at 140 kilometres an hour. They mate for life. They return to the same nest every year. And somehow the most remarkable thing about them is just how completely unimpressed they are by the whole situation.
One of the largest mainland gannet colonies in the world.
Worth the trip just to be ignored by this many birds at once.
