In Burma (Myanmar), we don’t just drink tea — we eat it too! Laphet, or fermented tea leaves, has been part of Burmese food and culture for generations.

Laphet has a long history as a gesture of peace and goodwill, and remains a symbol of Burmese hospitality — shared with guests, family and friends.

As an old Burmese saying goes:
“Of all the leaves, laphet is best.” 🍃

One of our favorite ways to enjoy it: Laphet Thoke — Burmese Tea Leaf Salad. 🇲🇲❤️

Food

Where Top Burmese began 🇲🇲❤️

This little space was Top Burmese in 2019 — a tiny delivery and takeout kitchen in NW Portland, with no real dining room and a very small menu: samosas, chicken curry, tofu curry, tea leaf salad and nan gyi thoke.

Then guests started showing up and asking if they could eat there. So we added a little seating…and then a little more. 😊

Before long, we had outgrown this tiny space and eventually found our home on NW 21st — our OG location that is very dear to us.

Looking at this photo brings back so many memories. We really had no idea where that little window would take us. ❤️
