Indigenous writer and artist Mihku Paul will share her program titled “Wikkihke- She Likes to Plant Gardens” in the Tate House backyard and garden on Thurs Aug 20 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. She writes

“Plants are completely essential to the health of ecologies and have long been
used by Maine’s “Waponahki” (Wabanaki) tribes for food and medicine and weaving supplies. Indigenous plant medicine has been practiced for centuries. There are still plants and shrubs used for nourishment and good health.”

Join Mihku as she talks about some of these plants, and shows participants how to prepare and enjoy a marvelous summer drink made from wild foraged plants, elderberry, and preserved rose hips. She’ll cover at least 3 plants, prepare summer tea, and a delicious fruit drink loaded with vitamin C and answer questions.

Mihku Paul is a Wolastoqiyik (aka Malecite or Maliseet) writer and visual artist born and raised traditionally on the Penobscot River in Maine. She holds a B.A. in communication and human development and received her MFA in 2010 from Stonecoast. Mihku has taught poetry and fiction writing to diverse groups including Waponaki Writers Project, Rise Up! and at the Maine Women Writers Collection.

Tickets will be available at the door and are $18 for the general public, $12 for children 12 and under, $15 for THM members, and $40 for a family of four (2 adults and 2 children).

Bring your own chairs or blankets for sitting in the yard. Some chairs are available- first come, first served. Picnics are welcome! FMI visit tatehouse.org or contact Director Holly K. Hurd at [email protected].

Exhibit Opening Reception, July 1, 4:30- 6:30 pm To Be or Not to Be: American or British?

Our 250th exhibit considers the activities of Tate family members – father George and his four adult sons, Samuel, George, William, and Robert, each of whom responded differently and equivocally to the American cause. How the Tates negotiated their place, possessions, and degrees of loyalty to the British Crown tells the story of the difficult choices people were forced to make during the challenging revolutionary period in colonial Portland. James Means, a staunch Patriot who became the Tates’ neighbor and whose 1797 house still stands opposite Tate House, will represent another perspective. Exhibit included with regular guided house tours in 2026. Members FREE, all others $15.
