School is officially back in session, calendars are filling up, and everything feels just a little louder. So, we rounded up some of our favorite places around Portland + beyond to slow down, get outside, try something new or simply sit somewhere beautiful for a while. Many are free or low-cost, and a few might already be covered by your library card.

A hallway or entry can be the perfect place to take a design risk. A well-placed wallpaper adds depth, personality and a little unexpected luxury, turning a space you normally pass through into something worth noticing.

Cooler days are creeping in, but we’ve still got a little sunshine on our backs. It’s the perfect window to knock out a few fall home tasks before the rain really settles in.

If you’re up for a little day trip this weekend, Mt. Angel Oktoberfest is back September 17–20. The small Willamette Valley town has been throwing this celebration for more than 60 years, with German food, live music, dancing and plenty of local tradition packed into a few downtown blocks.

Even better, the festival is a nonprofit with proceeds flowing back into local schools, churches and community organizations.
Go hungry. Wander awhile. Stay for the polka.

A very Portland way to spend your weekend: grab a coffee, head to the waterfront and watch dragon boats race down the Willamette. The Portland Dragon Boat Festival is September 12 + 13 at Waterfront Park.

For the second month in a row, Portland-area market conditions are shifting in a direction that gives buyers the advantage. Inventory and time on market are up, while closed sales, pending sales, and average sale price have softened. That does not mean the market has stopped moving, but buyers may have more options and less pressure than they experienced earlier this year where we were seeing multiple offer situations in many markets.

The source of the data is from August which is traditionally one of the slower months outside of December, with end-of-summer travel and back-to-school season pulling attention elsewhere. It will be interesting to see whether that seasonal slowdown continues this trend.

The bigger variable is interest rates. Rates have moved higher as inflation concerns returned to the spotlight, driven in part by rising gas prices and broader economic uncertainty with the national average for a 30-year fixed mortgage nearing 7%.

First Friday is all about the locally owned shops and businesses that make this neighborhood what it is. Doors stay open later, there are specials and pop-ups to stumble into, plus free live music at Village Park from 5–7:30 with Avery Baz followed by Tevis Hodge Jr.

We’ll have the fire going and the s’mores ready for a casual end-of-the-week hang. Come by, stay awhile, or make us one of your stops while you wander the Village. We’ll also be collecting non-perishable food and new hygiene products for Positive Charge PDX, so bring something along if you’d like to donate.

A little heads-up for anyone who regularly travels through the Rose Quarter.

Beginning Friday, September 11, I-5 southbound is expected to close between I-405 and I-84 while crews complete some major repair work. The closure could last up to five weeks, and while there will be detours, getting through and around this part of town may take quite a bit longer than usual.

Nothing to panic about, just something worth knowing if this is part of your daily route or you’ll be heading through the area.
