Homeownership is a key part of building and sustaining healthy, stable neighborhoods. The center serves individuals and families in southern Maine.

The Avesta HomeOwnership Center believes that strong, thriving communities help residents enjoy a better quality of life, and that homeownership, education and leadership support healthy communities. New homeowners begin to build wealth through equity and add to the economic strength of their community through this investment. Strong, thriving communities help residents enjoy a better quality of life. Homeownership education is critically important, especially in today’s economy, to ensure consumers understand their options and make strong financial decisions. Recognizing the number of new, current and future homebuyers in need of services, Avesta Housing established the HomeOwnership Center in 2012. Through this work, Avesta Housing provides another way to help families stabilize their housing costs and increase their economic self-sufficiency. The center provides homebuyer education to help consumers prepare for sustainable homeownership, helps consumers learn how to invest wisely on affordable and appropriate mortgage products, and offers foreclosure prevention counseling to help people retain their homes. Over the past year, the Avesta HomeOwnership Center has helped more than 450 individuals and families buy homes, learn how to maintain their home, avoid foreclosure and improve their credit and overall financial capability.

New HOC homeownership counselor making an impact 12/06/2023

Rain Daugherty, the new homeownership counselor for the Avesta HomeOwnership Center, helps first-time homebuyers who are purchasing single-family or multi-family homes by offering expert advice and classes to help them achieve this lifetime milestone while avoiding pitfalls in the process.

Rain entered the housing industry as a real estate agent in the early 2000s. She saw firsthand the effects of the housing crash that precipitated the Great Recession, and resolved to spend her career helping people make educated choices when purchasing a home.

“It’s commonly known that homeownership is the key to building intergenerational wealth, but it can also immediately improve well-being,” she said. “It’s immensely satisfying to help members of our community navigate the ins and outs of real estate so they can create a home for themselves and their families.”
