Considered the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan, Portland Japanese Garden is a haven of tranquil beauty in all four seasons.
Portland Japanese Garden is nestled in the hills of Portland, Oregon’s iconic Washington Park, overlooking the city and providing a tranquil, urban oasis for locals and travelers alike. In Spring of 2017, the Garden opened its new Cultural Village, complete with new garden spaces, classrooms, exhibition and gallery space, and the Umami Cafe. Portland Japanese Garden is a hallmark of our city, providing people with a place for healing, connecting, and building communities.
Last week, we celebrated O-Tsukimi, the Moonviewing Festival, and watched as the harvest moon came into view from the Pavilion’s Mt. Hood Overlook 🌕

We’re five weeks into tracking the Garden’s fall colors and there has been a very noticeable addition of reds, yellows, and oranges on our maples and other trees across the landscape 🍁🍂
Factors like temperature, light, and water all affect the onset and duration of fall colors, but you can expect to start seeing this magical transformation become more noticeable in the coming weeks. Visit our Fall Colors Tracker at our link in bio to stay up to date!
The Flat Garden is looking extra special this week 🌕🍂
Every year at the time of the Harvest Moon and the Moonviewing Festival, our gardeners create a special checkered pattern called ichimatsu moyo with the white sand in the Flat Garden. This pattern, inspired by the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto, will only be here for a limited time — visit soon to see its beauty in person!
Fall weather is on its way to Portland Japanese Garden, with reds, yellows, and oranges starting to appear across the maples and other deciduous trees 🍁🍂

Upcoming early closures announcement!
To help celebrate our annual Moonviewing Festival, O-Tsukimi, the Garden will be closing early on the following days:
Friday, 9/25: Last entry at 4:00 pm
Saturday, 9/26: Last entry at 4:00 pm
Sunday, 9/27: Last entry at 4:30 pm
As the event approaches each day, there will be partial closures in certain areas, including our Mt. Hood Overlook, Tea Garden, and parts of our Cultural Village. The majority of our landscape will still be available to enjoy an early autumn day in, so we look forward to seeing you here! Last week, Portland Japanese Garden was delighted to welcome back an old friend: Suminori Awata. A fifteenth-generation Japanese stone mason, Awata’s talents were tapped by the Garden in 2016 to construct its impressive Zagunis Castle Wall, an 18.5-foot tall and 185-feet long granite structure believed to be the first of its kind built outside of Japan.
Awata, back in the Pacific Northwest as he builds a new wall for Seattle Japanese Garden, drove to Portland and met with Hugo Torii, Garden Curator and Director of the Japanese Garden Training Center. The two of them inspected the wall together.
“It was an honor to receive Awata-san today,” Torii shared. “Next year we will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of the opening of the Cultural Village and expert craftspeople like him are the reason why it’s become such a revered space, not just in the Garden, but the entire city of Portland.”
