Hiring in Oregon? You may qualify for a new state tax credit. Business Oregon is accepting applications for the Qualified Jobs Creation Tax Credit — $1,000 per net new job, up to $10,000 per taxpayer per tax year. Applications for the 2026 tax year are open now and close October 31.

The program supports businesses whose primary activity falls in one of seven industries: advanced manufacturing, bioscience and biotechnology, clean technology, food and beverage processing, forestry and wood products, high technology, and outdoor gear and apparel.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Councilor Steve Novick today announced a combined $20,000 contribution to support the City of Newport's ongoing legal fight to prevent a federal contractor from establishing an ICE detention and processing facility at the Newport Municipal Airport.

The contribution, $10,000 from the Mayor's Office budget and $10,000 from Councilor Novick's Office budget, comes in response to a formal request from Newport Mayor Jan Kaplan.

This work was coordinated and led by Brenda Alvarado, the City of Portland's Immigrant Affairs Lead, appointed earlier this year to oversee sanctuary compliance, immigrant safety initiatives, and community coordination on immigration‑related issues. Alvarado worked closely with legal partners, advocates like Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, ensuring Portland's response aligned with legal precedent and community‑driven priorities.

Last week we were honored to welcome community members representing dozens of African immigrant organizations to our first African Immigrant Community Forum and the second event in this series. Thank you to our partners at Oregon DOJ, Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, and Innovation Law Lab for equipping families with trusted legal information, Know Your Rights education, and practical tools to help protect themselves and their communities.

Led by the City's Immigrant Affairs Lead, these forums are designed to help immigrant communities understand their rights, prepare for immigration enforcement, and connect with trusted legal and community resources before a crisis occurs. By bringing together community leaders, advocates, and government partners, we're building knowledge, strengthening resilience, and ensuring families have the information they need to protect themselves and one another.

Thank you also to City Councilor Elana Pirtle-Guiney, Senator Kayse Jama and the Somali American Council of Oregon, for their partnership in hosting this event.

We're looking forward to our upcoming Dreamer and Middle Eastern Community immigrant forums and many more after that. Together, we're building stronger, safer, and more connected communities.

I am extremely grateful to the Timbers for how they show up and care for our community. Next week is their 15th annual Stand Together Week, an initiative that supports nonprofit projects and creates volunteer opportunities throughout the Portland metro area.
