The first 7 years of Viva's musical career established her prowess onstage in such venues as AURA, PHOME, Sofar Sounds, the Inaugural Celebration of Maine's 75th Governor Janet Mills, EQME's annual Gala and other black tie functions of prominent local nonprofits, Thompson's Point and the State Theatre. In that time, Viva organized and conducted an elite team of jazz musicians while also participating in other noteworthy musical projects such as: the Go Big for Hunger concert series (as a backing vocalist to Otis Redding III); several pop-revue tribute concerts; 90s throwback cover band Sugarbox, and as a percussionist/trombonist with ska groups Bad Combo, the O’Harrows and Port Gorges while simultaneously managing a successful modeling and acting career. As a child, Viva was exposed to a robust variety of music from Cuban salsa to 90s pop to chamber orchestra and the great American songbook. She made her stage debut with musical theatre in high school. She began singing with a small jazz combo at 21 years old and directed her first performance a year later. After time recording in studio and abroad, Viva assembled an elite team of jazz musicians for the premiere of her band Viva & the Reinforcements. Since then, the group has played hundreds of events in dozens of cities across the continents. Viva The Sensation is her own band now, performing with tracks she’s carefully arranged, recording the instrumental parts herself, and focusing entirely on music that feels decadent, juicy, and full. http://www.vivasensation.com/

Every decision I’ve made has inched towards the life I want to live, and as difficult as it has sometimes been I don’t regret a single thing. The only things holding me back are leftover from trying to be obedient to people who didn’t understand systemic oppression or actively benefited from it.

They’re not just doing it for attention (though they might absolutely love that, too 🤭)
Any artist who performs music, theatre, dance or comedy has found themselves a way to deepen their understanding of their world through learning, repetition, failure and creativity. To do any skill in front of other people is to brave humiliation in the early stages. And as the performer matures, to take the stage is to take on the responsibility of setting the tone for everyone present.
Performance is an act of leadership, a gesture of love, and a public display of devotion to curiosity. It can be done in so many ways: recklessly, softly, passionately, resignedly, rigidly, even absurdly. Each show is an opportunity to reflect one’s inner world outward for any stranger or lover to behold.
For me, having the honor of dreaming up a showcase so I could see all my friends on stage doing what makes them the truly most them is so much more than I knew I would someday get to do. As a girl who used to sit in on a long-ex’d boyfriend’s Sunday brunch jazz gig, wide eyed and dazzled to know people who were real musicians in real life, it has never felt anything but magical to be able to tell talented artists I admire like or “hey I have a dream” and to have them say “I will meet you there in your dream and make it a forever treasured memory.”
15 years ago when I started singing I would never have believed that I would have a gorgeous and dedicated dance team like .fj and have made possible over the past four years. Back when I used to beg jazz boys to wear suits and play vintage jazz moll dress up with me (past life favorite game) I had no idea that one day would sew matching costumes for the whole company simply because she had the talent, imagination, and generosity to offer it.
So many people over the past 15 years have seen the way music gives me a reason for being and buoyed me with enthusiasm and encouragement. There’s so many of you to thank and I can’t thank you enough🩵 Who’s coming to DISCOTHIQUE? Tag your fr
