OHSU in American Samoa
The Department welcomes the Pediatric Ophthalmology team from Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) led by Dr Kellyn Bellsmith. This team is here for a week to partner with the local Maternal and Child Health (MCH) program to screen school children for possible vision impairment.
This team will screen at Matafao Elementary on Friday 9/18 and then travel to Manu’a islands over the weekend to screen children there.
We appreciate the partnership we have with the Department of Education, the Lions Club of Pago Pago, the Medicaid office and Dr Laloasi Steffany, ensuring our children receive the appropriate care for their vision so they can thrive in school and in everyday life.
Thank you for your continued commitment to our community Dr Bellsmith and the OHSU Pediatric Ophthalmology team. Faafetai tele!

Some of our SPDC staff, including one of our mentors, Josh Zulueta, had the opportunity to attend the Marianas Festival! It was a great experience to witness and celebrate the rich culture, traditions, and community of the Marianas. We’re grateful for opportunities like these to connect with and support our fellow Pacific Islander communities. ❤️🌺

Thank you, Olivia, for your remarkable contributions. We wish you all the best in your next chapter and future endeavors! 🌺
