Still Standing Oregon

Oregon is a wonderful place to live. Government in our state endeavors to be far thinking and so do people who live here. Our shared commitment to planning and developing an even better future informs our unique sense of place. Still Standing observes, however, that there is one serious omission in both the public and private view of the future. In Oregon, a coordinated and broadly energized regional effort to address the economic and life threatening consequences of major earthquakes DOES NOT exist. Oregon scientists have done the math. In a study commissioned by the Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Commission (OSSPAC), a team at Oregon State University (OSU),found that the California–Oregon end of Cascadia’s fault has a 37 percent chance of producing a major earthquake in the next 50 years. This event, in our current state of preparedness, would trigger a material depopulation of the entire Pacific Northwest.
