If your child struggles with reading, make space for their strengths.

Encourage activities where they shine—art, building, storytelling, or problem solving—to help build confidence alongside literacy skills.

Remind your child often: struggling with reading does not define their ability.

Consistent encouragement paired with the right instruction can make a lasting impact.

Autumn has a way of reminding us to look up and notice what’s around us. 🍁

Brillint leaves.
Misty skies
Towering evergreens.
It is a magical time of the year.

Sometimes the simplest way to make a day special is to slow down and notice the beauty right in front of us. Wishing you all a wonderful fall season.

Wishing all our families a wonderful fall season!

Reading practice can sometimes become the part of the day everyone starts to dread.

If that happens, it may be worth stepping back and asking: How can we make this feel a little easier?

A shorter practice session, a quieter space, or ending with something your child feels confident doing can make a difference.

And remember—reading progress isn't measured by how many pages you get through. Helping your child feel capable and supported is part of the journey, too.

What helps make reading time feel more positive in your home?

Sometimes you have to change your perspective to see what's possible. I was standing here in Arizona, when I was reminded how easy it is to focus on the path directly in front of us.

One step.
One turn.
One obstacle.

But sometimes we need to step back and look at the bigger picture.

A child who is struggling with reading is so much more than the struggle they're experiencing today.

There are strengths we may not see yet.
Talents waiting to emerge.
Possibilities far beyond the classroom.

I want every child I work with to know that one challenge does not define the size of their future.

One of my favorite signs of progress happens outside of tutoring.

A student starts noticing words “in the world.” A word on a sign. A label. A menu. Something he happens to see during the day.
Sometimes he writes the word down.

Sometimes his mom takes a photo so he can bring it to our next session. And, I love this because reading is no longer just something that happens during tutoring.

They begin to notice words because they want to understand them. They notice patterns. Ask questions. Make connections. They are beginning to trust that print can make sense.

Perhaps most importantly, they begin to see themselves as someone who can figure words out. That is powerful progress.

Every season brings its own kind of growth.

I love the way a garden brings together so many different shapes, colors, textures, and ways of growing.

Nothing is trying to be the same. And yet, somehow, it all belongs. As some flowers fade and others show blooms and beautiful colors, beneath it all, growth continues.

Children are like that too. Some learn quickly. Some need more repetition. Some are confident right away. Others need time and encouragement before they begin to see what they're capable of.

Different doesn't mean less. It simply means different.

As a new school year begins, I hope we remember to make room for every kind of learner to grow.

When it comes to helping a child with dyslexia become a confident, independent reader and speller, there isn't a shortcut. There is, however, a path that works. Many dyslexic learners have spent years feeling behind, frustrated, or embarrassed. Long-term tutoring isn't about moving slowly, it's about building something that lasts. Every child moves at their own pace, but consistancy builds confidence and makes the learning process easier.

There’s something so special about watching a child begin to believe in themselves.

When reading starts to feel a little easier, each small success builds confidence—and those small moments can add up to something beautiful.

Every word. Every step. Every “I can do it!”

Confidence grows one word at a time.

The crepe myrtle is just beginning to bloom here in Portland OR.

The bright colors make their appearance as flowers begin to open, with plenty of buds still waiting to bloom.

It makes me think about children who are learning something new that might not come easily to them.

Sometimes we look for the big breakthrough and miss all the little signs of growth happening along the way.

A new sound recognized.
A word read independently.
A willingness to try again.
A little more confidence than yesterday.

Not everything blooms at once.

And “not yet” is not the same as “never.”

Give children time. Give them encouragement. Give them someone who believes in what is still unfolding and the sky's the limit.

Some things simply need more time to bloom.
