Today is Estonian composer Arvo Pärt's 91st birthday!

Pärt's unique, meditative style draws listeners from all across the musical spectrum, making him one of the most performed contemporary classical composers. Many of his works use a technique Pärt pioneered called tintinnabuli, in which a melody is built around repeating tonal triads, creating a dissonance that resembles ringing bells. Spiegel im Spiegel (Mirror in the Mirror) is a famous example of this technique.

Fun fact: While a student at the Tallinn Conservatory, Pärt worked as a recording engineer with Estonian radio. We love a connection to radio! ;)
