Literary Arts is a nonprofit literary center located in Portland. Our programs include Portland Arts
Programs of Literary Arts
Portland Arts & Lectures brings the world’s most celebrated writers, artists, and thinkers to our community. In addition to events that are broadcast statewide on OPB radio, the program connects readers and writers of all ages with classroom visits and workshops. Our Youth Programs inspire public high school students to write, revise, edit, publish, and perform their own creative writing. The programs reinforce the real world importance of reading and writing in all professions, are designed to meet state and national standards for the arts and language arts, and help schools reach their goals of teaching writing across the disciplines. Oregon Book Awards & Fellowships supports, promotes, and celebrates Oregon’s writers and publishers. In addition to financial support, the program produces
the Oregon Book Awards Author Tour, which connects writers and readers throughout the state with readings, classroom visits, and workshops. Delve Readers Seminars allow readers to explore challenging books with fellow bibliophiles in discussion-based classes under the steady hand of an
experienced scholar. Wordstock: Portland’s Book Festival builds community around literature by celebrating writers and readers of all ages through author events, workshops, a book fair, and more. Save the date: November 11, 2017, at the Portland Art Museum.

On tonight’s special rebroadcast of our radio show and podcast, The Archive Project, we honor the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Dillard, who passed away this month at the age of 81.
Dillard was an incredibly talented writer who published more than a dozen titles, including book-length nonfiction, novels, essays, and criticism, while also teaching for more than 25 years at universities in the Pacific Northwest. In 2015, she was awarded the National Humanities Medal for her life’s work.
In this talk from 1989, she reads from her books PILGRIM AT TINKER CREEK and TEACHING A STONE TO TALK. Whether she is describing muskrats in Virginia or witnessing an eclipse in the Yakima Valley, she draws profound insights from the natural world and what it can tell us about ourselves.
Literary Arts is honored to have collaborated with such an influential writer.

The 2026 Portland Book Festival lineup is officially live!
We’re thrilled to bring an outstanding lineup of authors to this year’s festival, including Academy Award-winning actor Ke Huy Quan (Ke Huy Quan), acclaimed Oregon creative duo Colin Meloy (Colin Meloy) and Carson Ellis (Carson), and authors like Andrew Sean Greer (Andrew Greer), Melissa Albert (Melissa Albert), Elizabeth Alexander (Elizabeth Alexander), Alexis Nikole Nelson (Alexis Nikole Nelson!), and Tananarive Due (Tananarive Due).
As you know, this year’s festival extends beyond Saturday! From November 2–8, our partners are bringing storytelling across Portland—from performances with Oregon Symphony (Oregon Symphony) to live music with Mississippi Studios (Mississippi Studios) and 45th Parallel Universe (45th Parallel Universe), events at Portland Art Museum (Portland Art Museum), and culinary experiences featuring local and visiting chefs.
