Sometimes we stop moisturizing, stop covering our hair at night, or simply get overwhelmed. Before we know it, the damage has become so noticeable that we’re embarrassed to let anyone see it.

This is my favorite way to start locs. Why? Because they look like locs from day one.

“I know you like to think your locs don’t stink…” 👀 Let’s talk about it.

Mildew is one of the most common issues I see with locs, and almost every time, it comes down to one thing
not drying your hair properly.

Mildew is a type of fungus. Fungus thrives in warm, damp environments, and when your locs stay wet too long, it creates the perfect space for it to grow. That’s what causes that sour, musty smell.

If your locs stay damp, mildew will grow. Simple.

And I hear all the reasons
• “I didn’t have time”
• “I don’t have the right dryer”
• “I don’t want to put heat on my hair”

I get it… but mildew doesn’t care.

Towel drying is not enough.
Air drying locs, especially thick or long locs, is asking for trouble.
Soft bonnet dryers and handheld dryers usually don’t get hot enough or reach evenly through your locs.

The best way to dry your hair is with a hard top hooded dryer so the heat is consistent and actually penetrates all the way through.

Also keep in mind
If you work out a lot, sweat heavily, or let your hair get wet often, you are at higher risk for mildew.

The good news
It’s fixable.

Using the right antimicrobial shampoo and letting it sit will help remove the mildew.
But if you don’t change your drying habits, it will come right back.
