HOW A DESIGNER THINKS | The Kitchen Remodel
A designer doesn’t just walk into a dated kitchen and see what needs to be replaced. Terra sees what the space could become.
For this remodel, the goal wasn’t simply to swap out cabinets and countertops—it was to rethink the entire experience of the kitchen. The original space felt heavy and visually busy, with warm wood cabinetry, multiple countertop levels, dated finishes, and an island that didn’t take full advantage of the room.
Terra’s approach was about editing, balancing and creating intention. She lightened the perimeter cabinetry to completely change the feel of the room, then introduced a warm wood island to add depth and keep the space from feeling too stark. The oversized island became a true centerpiece—giving the family more prep space, generous seating and a much stronger gathering point.
She also simplified the visual lines throughout the kitchen: cabinetry carried higher, a statement hood that feels architectural rather than purely functional, a quieter backsplash, updated lighting, and finishes that work together instead of competing for attention.
And that’s where a designer’s expertise really shows. It isn’t about choosing prettier finishes. It’s understanding proportion, scale, function, sight lines, lighting and how every decision affects the next.
The result feels brighter, larger and more current—but still warm, timeless and livable.
