We are a street band of brass, reeds and percussion from Providence, Rhode Island. We help each other to grow in musicianship.

Mission/Value Statement

We welcome musicians from all backgrounds and all levels of ability to join us. We play in support of select causes and events in an attempt to draw community attention to them. We play free, guerrilla style and in the streets whenever possible and try to uplift everyone within earshot. We believe that the power of music may be more effective and powerful than weapons, arguments or war. We build community and share our love of music with each other and with our audiences. We interrupt your regularly-scheduled life with spontaneous moments of raucous musical joy. We encourage musical expression by playing with, and for, people of all levels of musical experience. We contribute to making the experience of saving the world a bit more fun and weird. We believe that any note is better than no note. We celebrate the heritage and joy of marching/roving band shows and their rich, diverse history. We hold each other to a standard of reliability regarding attendance at practices and shows. We operate as a democracy, sharing responsibilities and decisions. We value silliness, gratuitous antics and pure fun for its own sake as much as (if not more than) musical skill. Range of Music:

As the history and present state of brass, drum, marching, and roving bands shows, they are part of a rich and diverse history of styles, influences, cultures, and purposes. We hope to play songs that celebrate those histories, while having a great time playing together and with our audiences.

For as much as we love playing in and around Rhode Island, we love to travel to spread joy and solidarity wherever there are people to jam with.

So it was this weekend, when a handful of ERB members literally drove through the night to DC team up with DC Activist Street Band for the Defend the Vote March on Washington.

We are so proud of our bandmates who made the trek and showed up for democracy. Thank you to our new friends in the DC Activist Street Band for the great jams and hospitality!

What a night we had at Lippitt Park! Thank you to the city of Providence for sponsoring our show via the Ely Fund Performing Arts Series, to everyone who came out to dance with us, and to the good folks of Hope and Pawtucket who put up with our making a ruckus on a school night.

Coming this Thursday to a neighborhood park near you…it’s ERB! Thanks to another generous sponsorship from Providence’s municipal Ely Fund program, we will be at Lippitt Park for an open rehearsal on August 27.

Come out to hear the music — or sit in and jam with us!

“Sneaky” is not a word most would associate with ERB, but we did our best last night, tuning and warming up at a remote rendezvous point then actually being quiet for several minutes before exploding upon the unsuspecting revelers with our accustomed joyful noise. It was a beautiful party and we wish the happy couple many years of only the best surprises.

One of our favorite types of gigs is getting to support an ERB member with their work outside our band.

Saxophonist Megan Bent just had an art opening at Machines with Magnets Machines with Magnets Venue as part of an exhibition called Afterlife. Megan’s pieces reflect on her connection with her father and the experience of navigating the healthcare system, including collaborations with him during his battle with cancer.

It is a privilege to support our bandmates in their artistic endeavors, both within and outside of ERB!

We’ve got something extra special planned for rehearsal this week: We’ll be practicing in Riverside Park on Thursday night as part of Providence’s Ely Fund Neighborhood Performing Arts Series. Come on out to watch us…or play with us!

We are an open band, and we are structuring this practice to be especially friendly to potential new members.

The Block Island Fourth of July parade is one of our favorite ERB traditions. This year we simply could contain our excitement — so we got the party started on the ferry!
